Got back from the first 3 days of the season with a friend. NE NM, rancher tags. Really fun hunt, although the quality of the antelope just wasn't what I was hoping for. Lots of game, probably 20-25 bucks on our 12 sections, biggest was a mid 70's 14" er. Several 13" ers with good mass. 2 state hunters as well on the property, they were really pushing the goats hard, and many even got pushed off the property.
My friend and I ended up tagging bucks the second day of the hunt we had previously passed up the day before.
I shot mine at 490 yards with my GAP 7mm WSM. He was 13" and scored 73.25" My buddy decided to use my rifle after seeing my shot and we didn't think we would get within 400 yards by the second day (due to them being so spooked by the other hunters), but he ended up with a 260 yard shot on his goat. Basically a twin to mine, 13" and in the low 70's.
The ranchhand said that sheath quality had really suffered this year due to the drought. He had 20-25 sets of twins earlier in the spring, but was down to only 2 or 3 sets... he said most of the does with twins just walked off and left one to die due and just raise the other due to the drought. He said in normal years, they kill several 15"ers with the occasional 16"er, but none this year.
Overall a really fun hunt, looking forward to the meat after I finish aging it.
