For drilling and tapping per hole on a receiver for a scope base or a peep site? I'm having two holes drilled and tapped.
I just left my old Sheradin pellet rifle off and he's gonna charge me $30 per hole to put a Williams peep site on it.
Is that about right or is it a little steep? I don't mind paying it,just curious...

I've seen $20 and I've seen $40 so $30 ain't too bad.

No clue what the going rate is but I paid $25 (total) last year for 2 holes drilled and tapped. I was going to do it myself but for that price it wasn't worth me fooling with it.
I once visited a place where BBQ was a verb, Canadian whiskey was the norm and no sweet tea on the menu. Hell on earth for a Southern boy!!

Brownell's shop survey in the latest catalog shows $20 - $45 per hole, depends on area and who's doing it like any retail service business. $30 sounds fair.

Does he know where and how deep to drill the air rifle so it doesn't leak?

I once saw a customer complain about the price to D&T a gun. The gunsmith's price was $20 per hole (about 20 years ago). The customer said that price was rediculous and that it didn't take that much effort to D&T a gun, the smith said he would D&T it for $5 per hole but if he wanted the holes in the right place it was $15 more per hole!

I paid $25 but it was about 10 years ago. $30 sounds okay.

I had two guns done last year at $10/hole. It varies from $10-$30 per hole around here.

Hard to make any money at $10 a hole. By the time it is setup you are losing money.
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

Maybe so, guy did it with a mill pretty quick. I wasn't arguing with the price  Had the outfit that builds the Gator ARs quote me $50 to put 3 holes in an S&W 586. Not bad either.

I've also seen shops charge for the initial hole/set-up time then and additional fee for each extra hole. $25-35 initial and $8-10 per extra. Can really vary if you need to spot anneal the receiver or other extra cost. Four holes on a stamped .22 versus 4 on a 1903 Springfield is a big difference. Some jobs go through pricey taps pretty quick too. Also the ancillary time invested like meeting with the customer, writing the order, logging the rifle in your books, disassembly/reassembly, etc. 5 minutes to drill and tap but 30 minutes to get there.

I charge a $35.00 set up fee and $20.00 per hole. The $35.00 set up fee includes any necessary disassembly and reassembly. Even at that, you can lose money.

Yes, but the holes are centered and straight and the local folks don't have to send it out of town to be done right.

Malm, I'm with you. I have repaired many a homemade drill job for guys who thought that it cost too much to pay a professional to do it right the first time. $25.00 -$35.00 / hole is fair when it includes mounting, lapping rings, and bore sighting the scope or sights. If it were easy, girls would be doing it....(duck the thrown object....NOW) LOL

About 10 or 15 years ago while working in Appleton, Wis., I had a guy go nutz on me be because I charged him $17.50 labor for installing a center bead. Now when I go back to visit, people whine to me the area doesn't have a gunsmith, can't say I miss the cheap bastages.

I've heard people complain about prices on jobs that I've done for myself. They generally have no idea in what's involved in doing a job right, much less specialized tool costs spread over only a few uses per year. Then some think that the cost of a particular job relates to what they have into a firearm, as if it takes less time and care to do the same job on a low grade off the used rack than a custom. No wonder gunsmiths tend to get grumpy.
