Hey Gang,

Currently I have an Olympus E-520 DSLR with two lenses and I think I am going to sell the setup and get a point and shoot.

Anyone have any suggestions on what direction to take? I haven't looked at cameras for a few years and am out of the loop. But I do think I need to dump my olympus and get something else thats smaller and easier to carry.

Any info?
Kique

I'm going to pick up a Nikon P7100 when they come out in a couple of weeks. I was holding out for the Canon G13, but it looks like it might be awhile on it.

I'm in the same boat as you. I want a camera that takes excellent pictures and can be manually adjusted, but I'm less likely to have a camera on me if it is bulky.

There are a few great choices out there. Certainly the soon to be available P7100 is an excellent option. The current Olympus XZ1 is a great choice as is the Sony NEX series and the Olympus PEN series. Both of those have sensors that are at least 8x larger then the point and shoots which will give you much better images. Plus they give you better lens options.
All of these allow for both fully or semi automatic settings as well as fully manual settings.
Please let me know if I can answer any specific questions for you

I just got a PowerShot ELPH 300 HS as my daughter has my older P&S with her at college. Seems pretty nice so far as I learn the camera.

I bought a canon g12 last year. It's great. I can capture fantastic shots of my daughters volleyball games. Great night shots, mountains. Couldn't be happier

BTW, if you can, keep the SLR and add the shirt-pocket camera. They're different tools and serve different purposes, IMO.

Pretty tough to beat that one if you like flipping to manual controls and shooting in RAW format. I love mine.

How adding weather resistant to the mix? Looking for a camera to take backpacking in mixed weather. No snorkeling planned, but would prefer a camera that a little rain would not hurt. ??? Light weight would also help. Thanks!

I bought a Canon G-12 and really like it. One of my favorite features is the Macro focus that is automatic when your using the Auto setting. For instance you can take a photo of your wristwatch or something close like that without a tripod. Its really slick. I wish it was a lighter in weight, but the lens retracts back into the body to make it less bulky. That is a plus.
Low light shooting is great. I guess I would say its a great advanced point and shoot and easy to use.
