I stopped in to the local sporting goods store (aka the funstore), to make a payment on my 700 ADL lay-away. In their used rack they have a Remington 78 Sportsman (economy version of the 700, not a variant of the 788). I believe the price was $269. It is a short action, in 243 with open sights. No scope or mounts. I'd say the metal was 90-95 % with a bit of blueing wear around the muzzle and a bit of corrosion/rust/pitting on the bolt. The quick glance I gave to the hardwood stock, I'd say about the same condition.
I thought about laying it away myself, but it has "Sportsman 78" stamped into the side of the action in big azzed letters, which I found a turn-off. Someone with the ability to overlook that may find this a good deal.

Their # is 701-298-2918, ask for the gun dept. If you are interested, I'd call now as this won't be here on Monday, not this close to hunting season. If it matters, I am in Fargo, ND

I wish I were there because I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. It's a 700 pure and simple. They brought out the rifle with a hardwood stock (sycamore or birch) and just called it the Sportsman 78. I wouldn't let the letters keep me from owning it.

Well, I sure hope someone off the board is/did. I already have one gun on layaway there, and the BOSS LADY is telling me that my "hobby" is getting too expensive, so it isn't an option for me. I definitely don't need a 243, either. I could see socking it away for a later date, but I already have two projects in the closet that the BOSS LADY don't know about, one of which may never see the light of day (unless fortune smiles and I win the lottery).

That's 100% correct. M-700 all the way!

If I liked the sucks action, I'd rather have this older
jewell than one of the new ones. No wart, smoother
cycling, and a handle that I doubt will come off since they
used to do them correctly back then. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

New Tubbs recoil lug and a Winchester featherweight
contoured barrel with the action squared up and mated to a
steel aftermarket triggerguard. Possibly a 3 position
bolt safety so I wouldn't have to consern myself with the
sucks crappy trigger safety.

Drop it in a new Rick Bin finished Mickey Edge and finish the metal in cerekote. Caliber, you ask? Probably a 260
since I have a 7mm-08.

Perfecto! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />..........For a sucks. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
