Does anyone out there have the specs for the Remington 700 action/bolt hardness? I know I got it somewhere but am too beat up to look. Have one in the shop was in a fire. Appreciate the help.
Aloha, Mark

If it still has a stock on it , it should be alright . Steel anneals at 1300 + deg. F , wood will combust at around 800 deg. if memory serves me . So if the wood didn't burn then it didn't get hot enough to anneal . It sure does mess up the finisnes though .

Heat treated steel will soften if the temperature goes above the tempering temperature the steel was originally heat treated at.

If it is a chrome moly, it was probably tempered in the range of 750 to 1050 degrees F. Anything over that and there is a chance that it could have lost it's original hardness. Even over 750 degrees, if 750 was the tempering temperature.

Don't know for sure, but I suppose it could be re-heat treated.
