Chiggers when I was a young kid used to have family banquets on me until I was about 14yrs old or so and haven't bothered me since.
None of the oldtimers were bothered with them when I was growing up and I was itching like the devil and wondering why.
Does a person acquire an immunity to them?

If you get many on your thing and it swells you can have fun with an amenable girlfriend.

The trick is to find something that takes the itch out and leaves the swelling in.

Keeping the danged things off of you is the best route. Use insect repellent with heavy DEET content. Spray your socks down, spray your britches legs down all the way up, spray your waist then spray the belt line on your pants. And keep out of grass and weeds. Cheegroes and seed ticks love knee high weeds, especially in low country. I've had more than 30 little seed ticks from my knee down to my ankle before. After you get them all you can to is wash off with alchohol or even gasoline if you make sure you're far away from any sparks or flames. After you get them, cortizone or Benedryl cream is about the best way to tone down the itch along with Benedryl pills at night.

Ask isaac...
He SWEARS a full Brazilian wax job works. ============= It helps the medicine penetrate. You want full penetration. When I got mine,it looked like someone used me for a dart tournament from my waist down to my feet. I got a doc prescription for some cream. It immediately kills the [bleep] but when they already punch in the enzyme, you get the 4-5 days of itching whether you like it or not. Don't know about the clorox stuff but I'd do it if I ever got them again. Hope your not scratching your balls and ass all day, like you did in court.

Deet sprayed on before going into the woods. If you do get them, clear finger polish put on over the bites. This will suffocate the chigger and kill it, no more itch.

Get them often herv in Florida woods. Dab some clear, or color of your choice, fingernail polish on the spot. Almost immediatly stops itching and in a couple days--- all gone

Oh man! I've been living this nightmare for the past week. My ankles look like they took a blast of birdshot at close-range. Tried bleach, didn't help. My pharmacist just moved here from Philly and didn't even know what they were (honestly, he said he thought it was some kind of racial slur!) Jeez, city folks! He did sell me a bottle of "Chig-Away". It had no effect. Finally, a guy with horses told me he uses "Nix" head-lice shampoo on his horses' legs when they get the little redbugs. I put it on full-strength and let it dry, then washed it off. After two applications, I finally got relief - the itching all but disappeared.

I've heard wearing pantyhose keeps the chiggers off.
I know, I know......but I'm serious. I knew a few Marines who swore by it in the field, in chigger country.

Damn. You knuckleheads should have been in the Spanish Inquisition. Clorox?
The itch comes from an allergic reaction to the tube that chiggers make to breath through once they bore into your skin. Use a hand held blow drier to make your cells degranulate and release all their histamine at once. Itching will cease until they reload. Neosporin and Benadryl also help.

Read a similar thread on another website and got a new (and feasible) idea. Someone said put a small dab of toothpaste on the bite. I tried this last weekend when I only had a few bites and it seemed to work better and last longer than some other remedies I have tried.
Also, one method to keep them off that I have heard and am trying this year is to take a swallow of apple cider vinegar every day for a few days before going in the woods. They said mixing it with honey makes it taste better. I tried this and only had 3 bites after a weekend in the woods. Usually if I get into them I look like those of you that mentioned close range shootings with bird shot!
