It's a shooter again with a replacement barrel for the rusted out original and two boxes of old, but factory fresh 22 Savage ammunition. I'll let y'all know how the shoot goes as soon as we have some cooler weather down here in parched and tormented south Texas. Many thanks to Gary, Hubert and Doug for their tremendous advice and support. Also many thanks to "Savage Collectors" whose advice and valuable information has made it possible for me to avoid the many pitfalls associated with this unique rifle and cartridge combination. To honor my late Grandfather and preserve my family's vaquero traditions is important to me and this is a small part of that effort. God bless y'all and America. I gave the same advice to Hubert earlier today when he found two boxes of, I believe, Winchester ammunition. However, I bought mine to shoot and plan to reload. It was important to me to have some cases with 22 HP on them rather than 25-35 cases. This old rifle is an heirloom and I have no intention of letting it go so the collector value is of little consequence. Incidentally I mentioned that very thing to Hubert also today. Damn! I'm a "Do as I say not as I do" kind of guy now!
Good news! The old gun shoots!! A little refinement is still called for but it shoots just fine. 3 inches left and 4 inches high at 50 yards. I didn't use a rest, just bags, and the iron sights with a 6 o'clock hold. 2 or 3 inch groups. A small bulge in the cases, all around, about 1/4 inch above the base of the case. The spent cases reloaded but were a little bit sticky. I guess reloading will require full length re-sizing die. BTW, The trigger is great! Breaks like a dry twig.
i'am finding the same buldge in some of my cases ,to me it means that the chamber is worn, just why i do not know,,. ?used to much, cases over loaded ,chamber expanded????????????? Any one on here sehd some light on this problem ,?????? i found one of my 250s doing the same thing, and i fell that csaes will seperate at that point, will down grading the loads help, and if so to howmany grs?? THANKS FOR RESPONSES hope i am not steeling your thread but we seem to have a similar problem

Don't full length re-size unless you absolutely have to. That will dramatically lower case life if they're expanding that much. Best to start with fresh brass (like .25/35's) and load modestly. Save the full throttle stuff for hunting.

Good advice about the re-loads. Like many others, the chamber of this rifle has definite ring or circular "washout" that, I suspect, was a manufacturing error and not the result of wear. It seems to have been common.
