What brand/caliber/bullet/powder are you using this fall for the upcoming big game seasons?

My own choice is going to be a TC Omega, 50 Cal., Hornady SST, Clean Shot, 209 primer, optical open sights. Primary game is whitetails.

My T/C 50 cal renegade caplock with 80 gr FFg, and 180 gr Ball and patch.

I used my 333 gr maxi ball last time, and it did a superb job. But it may have been a bit much so I think the ball and patch should do just fine!

T/C System 1, .50 carbine. Rem. 209s igniting 90 grs. of 777 under 275 gr. HP T/C Maxi-Hunters. Not that impressive on paper, but the rifle just hits where I look and the results on impressive.

On the wish list for next year is a trad. front-stuffer with BP and patched balls... just 'cause... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Or, Traditions Shenandoah Flintlock (if I can get it on the paper) with black powder and patched round balls for whitetails.

Old .54 CVA Hawken (sorta, kinda, vaguely Hawken-ish) cap lock, patched ball, black powder. Finally gave in to a peep sight on the barrel now that I'm into reading glasses, don't know if it's a keeper yet. The opposite of fancy but it shoots well.

I gotta report component changes from my original post. I've been shooting a lot, getting ready for season, and my saboted bullet supply has gotten dangerously low. My powder supply of Clean shot was also very low.

Now, I live in Colorado, a non-sabot state, which makes it nearly impossible to replenish one's supply locally. Cabela's had my brand of stuff backordered. I also couldn't find a pound of Clean Shot anywhere in town. What to do? Hunting season opens in a week.

I made a trip to one of the local gunshops, and they introduced me to the Power Belt bullets. Legal for Colorado, without the sabots that have proven difficult to seat in my rifle, anyway. They also had a supply of Hodgdon's Triple 7, which I had not tried before.

So, I bought a supply of Power Belts, a pound of Triple 7, and off to the range this AM, along with 50 other folks sighting in for the upcoming season.

Man, these bullets are good!! Three shots with the new bullets and 100 gr. of Triple 7 to adjust my sights from the previous load, and I had the PBs shooting Dead Nutz at 100 yd. Four shots into 3", this with open sights. Bullets seat easily, being slightly underbore, and it was possible to seat bullets after several firings without wet-patching the bore. The Triple 7 cleans up easily, but not as well as the Clean Shot I have been using.

The Triple 7 is considerably hotter than either Clean Shot or Clear Shot, but its accuracy potential over the others is apparent.

Hope the next post has a whitetail picture attached!!

I guess I'll buy a H&R Handi Rifle in .45-70. I was told in MS that is now considered legal to use during their primative weapons season.

Another Savage user here. I made it out to do some shooting last weekend after a long hiatus. My Savage had a load (smokeless) in it from two years ago. It shot to within 2" of the bullseye at 100 yards. The next three shots, with time out to cool while other guns were shot, went throught the same hole. The next two shots opened up the entire group to the size of a quarter. I was using 180 grain Precision bullets with a sub base and Lee dippers out of N110 powder. Attempts with 195 grain duplex sabots were good at 2" but not anywhere close to the 180's. I'll try both loads at 200 yards and see if the bullet design makes a difference in drop or group. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with the Savage. Not sure about velocity this time but similar loads have chroned around 2700+. Shot three deer with the 180 grainer and performed perfect on all. One little doe was shot stem to stern for total penetration at over 24" and more like 30" with a recovered bullet showing perfect mushroom and about 85% weight retention. Now if I can just find the time to use it this year!
