I have a 2007 GMC 4 wheel drive. At a little over 100k I had to replace these hubs...or I should say I had to pay the dealer. Now at 187k, sounds like they are starting to roar a little again. Is there any preventative measures to help this? It was an expensive repair, although the only one during my ownership. My son is about to inhereit this truck and I am going to replace with another 1/2 ton 4x4. Has to be Ford or GM for my work allowance plan. I put 200k on a truck in 4 years. Does either have a significant disadvantage or tendancies with those type of miles?

It is the nature of the beast, A sealed bearing pack. My dad's went out at 100K on a 2002 duramax just like clock work. It's going to take someone to build a bearing pack that's maintainable, Some way to repack with grease.

Check out DMAXSTORE.COM

You can buy them there for a good price, with a lifetime warranty.

That way, if/when it goes out again, at least you're ahead a $200-plus part.

I replaced a bunch of them on my 2002 Silverado Z71 and much more other parts. The only way to avoid it is to do what I did, get a Tacoma.

yes swap in a left side drop, dana 60 from a 1997 or older 1 ton Ford , and then put a real rear axle under that 1/2 ton

I'll bet the Taco has unit bearings as well, though they'll likely last longer.

SOB's are hard to find. I mean hard to find at a reasonable price, seems everybody thats got 'em thinks they are a $1500 axle.

When this bearing starts to fail, what happens exactly? Just a loud moan? I've got a 2003 1/2 ton Z71 with 200,000 miles, and everything sounds fine and feels tight the last time I had it on a jack.

Brother in law had a 2006, his went out with 150,000 or so on it.

On the ranger, abs light came on first. Then you could hear it start grinding on something for about 4 seconds then it does this while your going through the middle of town. Then it gets exciting! Then you find out that your hub(if you call it that) got ripped in half, and the lil snap ring thats in there, is a dealer only part and naturally its not in stock.......

The trucks usually come in with a complaint of "metal grinding" sound, the rotor against the caliper bracket, if the bearing housing isn't rusted to the knuckle it only takes about 15 minuets to change one out.

2006 1500 Silverado with 150K. When it started going out it made a loud growling sound and the steering felt a little "off". Drove it to the parts store and bought a new assembly for $150. About an hour later it was changed and I was back rolling again. If you can change your disc brakes yourself then you can change out this assembly.

I have researched the inevitable replacement of the unit bearings on my Dodge 3/4 ton. There are bearing/manual hub kits available from Dyantrac and EBS for Dodge and Ford, wonder why nothing for GM.

The Dodges, Fords and Jeeps still use the old fashioned solid straight axle, the stub shaft is easily changed out for the old school style, the Chivys are IFS, and use a CV half shaft, a spindle kit for the GM's would require a spend set of axles too!, the cure seems to be the SAS of a Ford Dana 60 since the IFS Chivys are left hand drop.

I have changed several, and it is no 15 minute job. If you live anywhere they salt the roads in the winter, you got a real job of breaking loose that hub. If everything went right and easy its probably about 1 hour including the jacking up and clean up. Does anybody make a good (American made/quality) bearing for these?

when i was service writing i always used SKF bearing from O'riellys. I don't know if it was SKF or O'riellys but they would garentee them for life. Now the Napa version is an SKF also but only carry a year warrentee
