The E stands for "economy" model. No cartridge counter or checkering available, or tang safety if memory serves.

Basically the EG was a solid frame model G.

And the EG version first came to market when?
I, uh, seem to have misplaced my Murray's.

Joe,

Is it possible that the E Red refers to is an older E that is a featherweight? If so, that wasn't an economy model just lighter in weight. Made in the 20's for sure but don't have Murray's with me.

Good point Steve, I just took for granted that it was a later E, the earlier E's don't show up often.

I know if I found an earlier E I'd be bragging about it.
