after a few times at the range and doing some minor varmiting with the 300win i decided it wasnt my style of rifle.
i knew the gunshop in town had a 3006 in a ruger m77 mkII, stainless Ibeam synthetic stock. ive actualy had two of these rifles identical to this in the past. and liked them alot. they shot well and recoil is alittle less than the 300win in package that weighs a pound less.
the 3006 is already getn revamped, ive never cared for rugers shiny stanless action and barrel and always wanted to sand blast the shine away.
thats what ive been doing this evening. action barrel rings and bolt handle are all a dull egshel lookin almost grey. i sandblasted then rubbed everything down with triple ought steel well to close the pores so finger oils and dirt wont stick to the finish as bad.
finish looks good. almost like cooper rifles eggshel finish but more grey. the action, floor plate and bolt are all in the dishwasher. lol thats right im washing it in the dishwasher. but i also hit it with the pressure washer before tosin it all in the dishwasher.
ounce the washers done running ill yank the bolt apart and scrub out the bore. then toss the rings and the 3-9 lupy on it. and shes good to go to do some paper plinking and varmiting.
ill try and get some pics of the finished product.
later Evan
ps. ill do some stoneing on the trigger to before it all goes together. get it down to 3lbs or so.
trigger is done, stones to crisp 3ish lbs. bout perfect for hunting rig

I too love those Rugers. I have 4 of them in stainless with the old style stock and they are sport a bead blasted matte finish and Timney triggers. Good choice!

Count me in as a fan. I have a couple, plus a 77 was my first deer rifle so I have a soft spot for them.

Don't mean nuttin. Only have to make yourself happy.
I like the integral scope mounts. I have one rebarreled to 6.5/06 that is a tack driver and another secret yet to be let out.
For what it is worth, I find more love for the tang versions, just a silly little quirk of mine............

I was thinking about what I have killed with my Ruger 77 in 30/06 (rebarreled to 6.5/06 about 2 years ago). For many years it was my ONLY rifle (sans a 22). Deer, bear, boar, mtn. goat, squirrel, coyote, crows, grouse, wolf, turkey, snakes, fish, rabbits, and God knows what else........

I to use a ruger, a 77 MKII ultrta light stainless synthetic in 30/06.I was thinking on getting the barrel and action teflon coated as i dont care for the high shine. I would love to see some pictures of the one you sandblasted Evan sounds alot cheaper that route Later Tanoose

What's a Steelhead doing in Florida anyway? I lived in Ketchikan, AK prior to this and steelhead are my passion, or should I say were. Hopefully soon again.

hmmmmmm hideing ruger folk here on the site. maybe rugers are the go to rifles that are gona give the sucks a run for its money. i currently have on 700, one tang ruger, one mkII and one #1 so who out numbers who, atleast in my gun cabinet.
i just grabbed the 3006 to fondle it somemore, its sitn on computer dest with me. im gona call it grew matte finish, its completly difrent than the stainless rugers. actualy is closer to the vt boltactions but more grey.
the matte 3-9 loopy even looks great on it in the low rings, the 40mm bell is dang near kissing the barrel.
and man the trigger turned out great, its the second ruger trigger ive stoned, ill always stone before buying a trigger. that way i get free trigger if it works out if not then im out nothing and buy timney or anyother trigger for that matter.
this trigger did take me awhile to get the creep out ounce i had the pull to where i wanted it. i was concernd that i was on my way to fubaring my first ruger trigger but the creep came out all right and pull stayed dang near the same just a ton crisper.
ill take pics tommmorwo i need film

Just picked up a blued, tang safety, laminated stock .270 today. Good friend of the family died two weeks ago and his wife is selling the guns. I saw this rifle about 30yrs or so ago when Dick called Dad to come over and take a look at his newest toy. He and Dad were best of friends, and I went along over to see this beauty. Hadn't seen it till today, but just as pretty now as it was then. I think the sight of that gun planted the seed of my looniness. And it will go hunting this fall.

Evan,
Hi my name is Chris, and I am a Rugerholic!
IIRC I own:
a 77 tang in .280 (my first bolt action deer rifle) a 77 RSI tang in .308 a Stainless 77 MK II in 7mm Mag a couple of No. 1's a couple of 10/22's a GP-100 4" in 357 a Red Hawk 7.5" in .44 Mag a pair of Vaquero's, one in .44 and one in .45 a Mark II 5" Bull Barrel a Single Six .22 convertable a Bear Cat
For the record though, I also have a couple of Sako's, a couple of Winchesters, a few Marlins and a 6 Sucks. I guess when it comes down to it, I have more Ruger rifles than any other flavor, however, this is subject to change at any (impulsive) moment!
