Ok, been having this recurring itch to build a 264 Win Mag out of a Savage Model 116. I have access to a Savage Model 116 338 Win Mag Barrelled Action. I was on E Arthur Brown Website today looking at a Savage replacement Barrel kit in 264 stainless steel barrell. Only problem I have is that it is 24" Barrel 1-9 twist. Thinking it needs to be a 26"
I am also questioning whether or not I need a 264.
Thoughts????

Every time I get the itch for a 264Win Mag I look at 270Win velocities and powder charge per shot and .270 seems to be a better solution. Sadly I'm bored with a 270win but have 2, .260 rem and a 6.5Creedmoor For barrels check Northland Shooter Supply, Shilen. E R Shaw, Mcgowan , Sharp Shooter Supply and Pacnor.
I have a 116 in 300Win and am pondering the next barrel too...

Put a Hart or Shilen 26" barrel on that 270 and rechamber it to 270 Weatherby. A 150g Partition at 3245 fps blows both the 264 Win Mag, and the 270 Win away ...

What can be done with a 150gr Partition @3250, that can't be done with a 140gr partition @ 3200?

I had Lee "Redneck" from here on the campfire put me together a .264 last year.I had longed for one for some time also and got the usual this is "BETTER" than that yada yada. I went with a Pac-Nor 1:8 twist 26 inch 5R, set the throat up for the 140 Bergers. STEXAS nailed it.....

I have a Ltd Classic M700(1985?) in 264 Win Mag with the 24" barrel. It has a SAAMI spec chamber and throat. A friend has a couple of M77 Rugers in 264 that have 26" barrels and a longer throat in them. When I load 140 gr NPT's I have to seat them shorter than I would like to, so the 140 NPT encroaches on the powder space with certain powders. My friend with his longer throated chambers doesn't have the same problem . even with more powder cap he had a devil of a time hitting 3200 fps with full diameter bullets. The original factory loads both Remington and WW featured 2 diameters spitzers that didn't develope as much pressure as full length single dia bullets more commonly availible today. He eventually said the hell with 140 gr bullets and went to x's in 120 gr size and regularly gets 3200 fps +. I still have a supply of 140 gr 2 diameter bullets to shoot. So you really need to get your ducks in a row on what could be a spendy mistake. Far as I'm concerned with the 270 Wthby you are golden, period.Good luck Magnum Man

I use my 264 for open country deer, and have settled on 125gr Partitions or 130gr AB's at 3300fps.
But if you like 140's MD did an article a few years back in which he as able to reach 3200 fps with 140's using new powders.

Well the reason I ask why I need a 264 is because I already have a 270 Weatherby Magnum. Every now and then I see something and I get an itch for some reason to build a rifle. I want to build something, that I can both reload for and buy ammo for. I want something on the rare side but no to rare. I don't need to build something in a Standard Caliber or a Standard Magnum Caliber because I can just buy one.
I am pushing 130 Grain Barnes X bullets in my 270 Weatherby at about 3400 FPS. So the performace need for a 264 is not warranted.
I guess it is just the nostalgia of the 264 that whoos me sometimes.

Hey, I understand. After I bought a .300 Winchester mag, I really had no earthly reason for another big .30, yet I somehow ended up with .300 Magnums of the Weatherby, Winchester Short, Holland, and RUM variety. I have four 7 mags (two Remington, two WSM) and a .257 Weatherby, but I still want a .264, though of the later NH production M70 variety.
This is a shooting forum, there is no place here for logic.

Understand MD270, Maybe you need to pull a JB and find a really nice pre64 shooter, scratch the itch and slake the thirst for the 264. The original will give you hands on that you want and when you get bored you will have one that went up in value.Just an idea and some of them don't allways have to cost us money we can't retrieve. Hmmmmmm a New Haven Model 70 in 264 win mag - now that would spark my interest.
Yeah my wife really doesn't want me to scratch that itch. That would mean a bigger gun safe or another gun safe.

The 264 is like the 220 Swift to me in the way that they are the the old hot rods. 264 been around longer than the 300 min mag. To me they have the same appeal as a ford flathead with finned navarro heads, isky max 1 cam, twin stromberg 97 carbs, fenton headers... Yeah the 7mm mag and the likes are similar to the lame jane small block chevy that everyone and there uncle mike and cousin bob has. More power in stock form.... But compared to the flatty it is butt ugly and simply boring. "respect the classics man"
Something clever here.

Had a '49 Mercury 2 door and a '50 Lincoln, best damn cars I ever owned - especially the Mercury.

Merc, the crown jewel of the flatheads. The way I figure, if you're gonna get the job done (hunting) there are hoards of tools to choose from. I like the tools that get it done with some style points. The 264 is a sexy bish, that's all there is to it.

Dude, you don't need a rational excuse to build a rifle. Just do it. Don't worry about ballistics, or look at drop tables, or listen to goobers rattling on about this or that being better, build the .264 Magnum. I had an original Winchester and wish I still had it. If you really want to go whole hog, including the squeal, get a Super Match drop-in barrel from these folks www.pac-nor.com or a Select Match barrel from these folks www.shilen.com/savageBarrels.html. You can also send the barreled action to either one and have the throat cut for your choice of bullet, and the contour matched. All my magnum barrels are 26". I recommend the 1:8" twist.

Well, the .264 is more than just 3200 fps 140 grainers, and I know elk don't much care for that. They don't like 120 grainers at 34-3500 either. You've real live big game bullets down in the 100 grain range too, and you can drive those around 3700 fps. Antelope don't much appreciate those.

I'm having one built right now, should be done in a couple weeks. 26" Krieger on an M70 action, McMillan stock.
I'll put up some pics when I get it.
