The zeiss conquest are very nice indeed, I have looked at several and they appear to be well made. However, I often read on this forum that "they are brighter than leupold", etc... This is the part that get me 'cause I would really like to know how folks are measuring this brightness. I own scope made by leupold, swarovski and schmidt & bender. I like them all but can not really say, on an apples to apples comparison (same power and objective lens size) that one brand is really better than another. Personally, I do not think the zeiss conquest line, as nice as it is, is any better than a similar leupold VXIII. If someone is going to make a comment that something is better, I would like to know how they came to that conclusion. Nothing personal here, just expressing a bit of frustration.

Happy shooting!

If you can't tell the difference between a S&B and your Leupold why should we waste our time telling you how much better the Conquest is than the Leupold?

257, let me allow you to organize a bit better. Send me the Swarovski and S&B scopes and I'll send you back the representative of those scopes from the Leupy line brand new in the box. That way you can have all the same. Will make life much better AND you can have the clearest brightest glass on all your rifles.

I have two s&b 6x42 scopes and they are very nice for sure, but...are they really worth 3x the price of the leupold 6x42. I have not compared them side-by-side but I will. still, as much as I do like the s&b scopes, I can not really say they are worth 3x. I will do a comparison this hunting season to see how they do at the end of legal shooting light. My personal challenge has been to find a scope that is the equal to my binocular in low-light conditions. I have an new 8x56 that may be up to the task but it is still unproven.

I am not putting down the conquest line, they are nice for sure, still, for my hard earned $, leupold get the nod if I had to choose between the two, $ for $.

To my way of thinking, the conquest line for zeiss is similar to the AV line for swarovski, nice but not the real-deal (as compared to their representative high-end stuff).

Any Leupol made pales in comparison to the Swaro A-Line. It's not even close. Swaro A-line is the best 1" tube on the market.

the best 1" tube? i dont know but i have a zeiss diavari V T* 3-9x42 that is pretty damn good 1 inch tube with an etched reticle, unlike the wire reticle in the swaro a-lines, plus it has true fixed 3.5 inch eye relief and an eyebox similar to a leupold. I would not be so quick to say the swaro a-line is the best

why dont you buy a conquest and use one to see if it measures up. its kind of hard to compare in a store

sako75, I was going to buy one but I bought a leupold 6x42 instead. I do really like the conquest line and I think they will really make a dent in leupolds sales. I think many hunters are proud to bring a new zeiss to camp for their buddies to see. zeiss has an excellent reputation with their high end stuff and that will carry over to the mid-market as well. still, a get a burr in my saddle when people tell me that one scope is so much better than another when it's a matter of opinion, not fact. I am not trying to defend leupold just 'cause I own a few, as I said, I own other brands as well. for me, after using several different brands, I like leupold at any price point. the only exception is the top of the line stuff from zeiss, swarovski and s&b, those products are peerless.

The experts tell me the conquest line is "the real deal" but I have not seen a "consumers report" with any real testing.

back to the swarovski a-line, I had a reliable soure tell me that he had three "fail" on him, this guy is an optics expert and he does not have an ax to grind with swarovski. swarovski responded to an email from me explaining that the a-line internally is different from the more durable ph line.

I have owned four a-line scopes, sold them all. the last one, a 4x12x50 was very nice but it cost me a very nice buck the year before last. I was watching a buck through my binocular but could not find him in the scope, nver got the shot off. appeared to be the largest buck I have ever seen on my farm. conditions were early morning, a bit overcast.

I had money in hand to buy a conquest 3x12x56, just for fun, until I was told it weighted 25 oz. passed on that one.

Now that would be NICE! I don't think it'll ever happen in my lifetime but, it would be nice.

I heard the same expert (somebody from out of town) but I've also heard many glowing reports from people that owned them too. Never looked through one myself. I've got a PH 2.5X10X42, now that's a sweet scope! On the Conquest, I've owned I think four of them. I like'm a lot, a little more than the VXIII, but that's just me.

"The best 1" scope"? Well that would have to be my S&B 4X.

No need to argue any more it's all been decided <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

TC1, the 42mm ph you have is very nice, I have been looking at one locally but it is not cheap. the s&b 4x is a dandy also.

it may be impossible to build a scope that is good as a binocular as the binocular lets you use both eyes at the same time.

some folks think brightness is not a big deal but most of the "good" deer I see in GA are at dawn and dusk, in heavy timber so quality optics go a long way.

I have two of these, a 3x9x40 and a 3.5x10x44. They are my favourite scopes. I currently have Leupold Varix111, Nikon Monarchs and elite 3200's onmy other rifles. My favourite of the group is the 3x9x40, the constant eye releif is amazing and the clarity is fantastic. I am unconcerned about the 2-3 oz more weight than the Leupold, the extra field of view more than makes up for it..

I swore by Leupold for many years and still think they're mighty fine scopes. However, since I bought my first Zeiss Conquest soon after they first came out, I've had virtually no desire to buy another Leupold. I've used both brands in the field and at the range on many occasions and just plain enjoy using the Conquest more.

I find it interesting that recently Leupold has found it necessary to take out full double page ads in various magazines to explain in great detail why they're scopes are so good. They never had to do this before if I recall correctly, so evidently other companies (like perhaps Zeiss) must be eating into their sales a bit.

I have to agree with most here that the conquest scopes are very nice indeed. One problem that I recently ran into though with a 4X14 that I put on a 6mm is the rating of their crosshairs. I wanted a fine crosshair and got one but I do not consider it what I would call fine. Kind of wish I had just got the standard plex as the center of the crosshair is finer than their straight fine model. Other than that, a great scope...

As far as I can tell, Zeiss does not make any fixed x scopes.

Delta Hunter, I know what you mean about the leupold ads, there is alot of competition in the scope business, just flip through a cabelas catalog. additionally, I do not think the market is expanding very much. most of the folks I hunt with only own one rifle and don't need another so they buy one scope and keep it forever. when you get into the $300 plus range, there are lots of choices for scopes. for some, I think they just like telling folks they own a zeiss. I have always admired the high-end zeiss stuff but would probably go with s&b or swarovski if I were spending $1500+

leupold has a tough road ahead of them if they are trying to grow the business 20% + annually, there is simply too many good choices today at all price points.

Reticles are a personal thing, what you don't like about the Zeiss is the thing I like most. I prefer the slightly heavier Zplex to the stanard Leupold plex which my eye finds kind of busy.
