So what if it ain't original...you have one of the finest made-to-hunt rifles on the planet with the memories of loved ones to go with it wherever you hunt.....
+1, I totally agree.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

This is my 270WSM fwt I bought in the first year of production. I replaced the plastic grip cap with a steel super grade cap, and trigger guard assy with a steel guard. Just seemed right to do and the added weight I couldn't even tell. I have shot many a whitetail and proghorns with this rifle. Topped with a Zeiss Conquest 4X16 I think. This is my 300WSM in a Bell & Carlson Medalist stock with Freedom Tan patter. The rifle is topped with a Nikon Monarch in 4X16 I think. I added a target turret for elevation and had a Kenton Industries dial made for my load. I have taken mule deer, whitetail, elk, and bear with this rifle. You have good taste. Nice rifles....

Thanks bsa1917hunter,
I have always been a model 70 fan. From the first stories I read as a kid from O'conner I had to have one.
If I'm in the field hunting big game you can bet money I have a model 70 in my hands.

Do they have to be pre-64's to get some face time if not I will post my pictures.
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer or elk but how he hunted it.

If I'm in the field hunting big game you can bet money I have a model 70 in my hands. I hear that. I always wanted one too because of JOC and others even Jim Zumbo and Charmichael planted the bug. However I could never afford one until I got older. I always packed the "poor man's" model 70 (sporterized m1917) and was content with it until I got my first pre 64 . I am very impressed with the new winchester model 70's too. Even the one Newhaven model 70 30-06 impresses the hell out of me with how consistently accurate it is. They are great and always work, alot to be said about that..... One of my favorite videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJEU...=FLpIJyGt699pwC12ePf4zlSg&lf=mh_lolz

Is this a glitch in the system, or is your buddy just camera shy?

BLKTL53, My understanding is the .338 was introduced in 1958 and first produced in 1959. I have one that is 459XXX. Perhaps I'm mistaken. Pete

Win manufacturing dates sez 1958, when I looked it up. I, or they could be wrong too. Doesn't matter to me, though. Mine was bought from the original owner, a gun dealer in our city that kept the first .338 that came to him.

Hey pak, Looky what I just found out..... "The year of manufacture for serial number 454XXX is 1959." Good call. Guess I'd better ask for my money back! LOL Per: http://oldguns.net/sn_php/winmods.htm

Blacktail, I'm with you. I've used mine on moose, brownies and sitka blacktails. Although I'm pondering letting this rifle go for something less powerful. I'm getting to the age that I would rather shoot a lighter recoiling cartridge and I don't keep guns I don't use. pete

I bought mine for hunting elk and it's worked wonderfully for that purpose.
In the 90's I made up my Sako .358 and in 2000, I started archery hunting. The Alaskan hasn't been used since.
Although I kill an elk almost every year ( damage permits ) I just use the .358 or my .270 and they do just fine.

I've owned over a few pre-64 M70's over the years and have owned a few post-64's plus a few custom rifles built on M70 actions. I've much preferred vintage lever rifles. However, I recall a few years back - five or so - spotting some Winchester custom shop M70's for sale. I vaguely recall one in .35 Whelan and I think with an octagon barrel. As these were Winchester made rifles new in the box, I recall I did make an inquiry about them - and they were long gone. Ring a bell with anyone?

I have a few, but right now I'd like to show you my deer rifle. It is a Model 70 Classic in 280 Remington. To me, it is the perfect deer rifle.
