$15 Shipped 4 boxes (20 rounds each) of ammo, 2 bags of brass (50 pcs. each) and a set of dies... from here in California to Alabama... Could have put it in a medium USPS flat rate Priority Mail box, it would have easily fit, and shipped it for $10.95... But wanting to do things legal like; I go ahead and shipped it in a box about 8"x10"x7" weighing in at 13.8 pounds and label it correctly with the ORM-D Cartridge, Small Arms label and ship it UPS Ground, and the cost is $25 and some change! Yup, it cost to do things right! Phil

Actually I thought UPS was the only way to ship ammo "legal" I don't believe if USPS knows it's ammo they will ship.
I have been wrong before, and surely will be again but this is how I understand this subject.
I'll be watching this thread as I am very interrested to see.

The question is what would the penalty be if you mailed ammo and got caught?

USPS should not be used for ammunition shipments. Here is the actual postal code:
341.21 Nonmailable Explosives Nonmailable explosives found in the mailstream must be immediately reported in accordance with POM 139.117.
Nonmailable explosives include, but are not limited to, the following:
a.Common Fireworks. Fireworks are classified as Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 explosives depending on the degree of hazard. Fireworks include roman candles, skyrockets, helicoptertype rockets, cylindrical and cone fountains, pyrotechnic wheels, illuminating torches, firecrackers, salutes, and combinations of items that are designed to produce any of the aforementioned types of effects. All types of fireworks are prohibited from mailing. b.Fuses. Fuses are classified as Division 1.3 or 1.4 explosives depending on the degree of hazard. All types of fuses (except safety fuses as permitted under 341.22) are prohibited from mailing. c.Small Arms Ammunition. Ammunition is classified as a Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4 explosive, depending on the degree of hazard. Ammunition that is regulated as a Class 1 explosive and designed to be fired from a pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun, as well as associated primers and blank cartridges (including those designed for tools) and propellant powder for use in any firearm, is prohibited from mailing.
UPS will ship via Ground service but should be identified with the ORM-D label.

what code? Orm-D can be designated by the letters simply written and boxed on a carton and simply has to do with DOT regulations which apply to the carrier. Can you cite an example of a year sentence?

Hazardous materials falling under the ORM-D classification are exempt from all shipping paper requirements and can be labeled "ORM-D, Consumer Commodity" pursuant to 49 CFR 172.316. No other labeling, manifesting or DOT hazardous material paperwork is required.

Somebody needs to tell Midway. They shipped a box of shotgun ammo to my Post Office a while back.

[bleep] the usps. I know a guy (very intelligent, handsome and good with the ladies) who always ships his ammo priority and so far all 50+ shipments made it without issue. Amazing how bullets don't go off when they get on the plane???
