I am working on a load for my 340 WTBY using a 250 gr bullet. I have used a Hornady 250 BTHP with H4831. Can't get 3 shots to group. Sierra 250 gr spitzer didn't work either. I have a load worked up with a 225 gr Hornady spire point with IMR 7828 that shoots .6 groups, but would like to get that 250 gr. working. Got any info? Some told me that the WTBY only likes flat base bullets. Anyone know anything about that?

I don't think the 340 is that old. Older Weatherbys that were West Germans in the 1960 to 1970 range in the .300,.270 and the .257 had slower twist that did not always work with boat tails. I have something like 35 old West Germans and a few Japs and a lot of the later USA's. You just have to try it and see. I have an older .300 that has the slower twist that shoots 165 grain boat tails into an inch at 300 yards from a solid rest. I wished I could help you with the 250 grain question, but I as you found a sweet spot for the 225's.
Good shooting,
Marcus.

I've shot the 340 a whole lot, been thru a couple of barrels. I've never seen anything that would even hint at the the idea that it has a preference for flat bases.

I'd try 7828, and R25 and R22 to see if one won't perk. The 250's have always given me incredible accuracy. Try the 250 Horn flat base or round nose to begin with.

Mountain Front....I have the opposite problem. My 340 doesn't seem to like anything BUT 250 class bullets. It loves the 250 hornady spire point and nosler partitions but I can't get it to like lighter ones. I'm using I7828 up to about 87 grains and pushing about 2900-2920.
FWIW I have a quite a few wby's and can't say in general it's true they like only flat based bullets. Also, I have a 300 ul that shot nothing good until I started seating bullets really deep in the case. I would recomend that you try the 7828 powder first and then play with seating depth if you want to keep exploring the 250's

I have never heard of a 340 Wby Mag that would not shoot 250 Sierra's. (NEVER)

However, if that is the case and it shoots 225 Hornady bullets that well, I would just try the 225 Nosler Partition.

I shoot 225 grain Nosler Partitions in my 338 Win Mag and not only get great groups but excellant performance on every thing from wild hogs to big elk.

I assure you a big game animal will not know the difference in a 225 Nosler or 250 anything else. That bullet works quite well.

85gr RL-22, F215 primer and any 250grainer of your choice. Load shoots sub MOA on both my 340s
