Ever have one of those hunts where it seems that nothing can go wrong? We have had a few different bucks spotted over the last several weeks. Most of them are covering some pretty large areas and are pretty hard to pin down due to all of the bird hunters in the area jumping them almost daily. One particular whitetail however, was living in a spot that is unknown to most bird hunters and was therefore likely to be in the same area we had been seeing him. This is the same whitey that I mentioned in my pheasant post last week.

The day dawned calm and clear over here in God's Country. We were up and glassing one of our hotspots as the sun peaked over the horizon. After spending an hour thoroughly glassing this place, we moved on to another. Almost as soon as we started to glass we saw the whitey we were after grazing a hillside with a smaller buck at about 3/4 of a mile. We layed out a plan of attack and moved out at a jog to intercept the buck. As we neared the area that he had been in we slowed and glassed ahead. We soon spotted him moving through some tall grass at about 300 yards. The trouble was, we were in equally tall grass, precluding the use of the boy's bipod and eliminating the chance for a 300 yard shot. We decided to sneak closer by crawling through the tall grass about 50 yards to the back of a rock pile that would give him the elevation that he needed to put a shot on the buck. By the time we made the rock pile the buck had moved closer and was now at roughly 175 yards. The boy quietly deployed his Harris 25S and centered the buck's shoulder. At the shot, the buck dropped and the celebration began. This is his fourth good whitetail buck in 4 years of hunting - One shot every time. Pretty proud of him!
He's shooting a Ruger Hawkeye stainless in .280 and firing 140 gr. BST over 56 gr. RL19.

+1, that's what I was thinking!

Nice job to you and your son.

My youngest daughter has a bad cold so we weren't able to go either.

Congrats on a real nice whitey!
