Like to know if anybody has tried this powder? Have a custom 7mm rum, 28" barrel. Want to see how it performs

I called Alliant and talked to Ben Ammonette just last week. I was asking if they had plans to import any more powders from Nitrochemie that had a longer burning curve like RL-17 only a bit slower for magnums. He said no but they did have one other powder that Nitrochemie makes called RL-50. He went on to say that it is made for the 50 BMG and he sees no other use for it.

I did a search and so far it is not mentioned in any burn rate chart. I know guys are using us 869 and Hodgdon H50BMG in some of the larger cases like the ones Kirby Allen makes. Can't find anyone using it yet or whether it is ball, flake or extruded. I do remember Kirby talking about bridging of extruded powder during firing in some of his huge cases and the need to use ball powder to prevent that issue. I did a search for RL-50 load data on Long Range Hunting and am not finding anything.

Guess you are going to have to wait or take the slowest powders listed on the chart and start low with RL-50 and work up. Personally I'd wait and use a powder that has a track record for a large case other than 50 BMG.

I had good results with RL-25 and I hear others like Retumbo. Do a search of Long Range Hunting and see what else you can find. Sign up there and give Kirby Allen a PM. Perhaps he is testing it.

Thanks Azshooter, I am already burning retumbo, rl-25 and viht n570 in my 7mm rum. I really like alliant powders and was wanting to try something a bit slower than rl-25.
