OK, let's say I have a Steyr-Mannlicher MIII Professional in .270 Winchester. I love the rifle but can't love the cartridge even though I have killed a boat load of deer and stuff witht the round. I like the distinct barrel with the hammer forge marks left on. How big a pain and would it even be possible to have the current barrel rebored to 7mm and have it rechambered to .280AI?

From what I understand, it's not possible. It's just that removing 0.007" is simply not enough to clean up the rifling during the re-bore, and then cut new rifling.

.007 is , after all, a quantum leap!

Absolutely! But it's more a result of the excellent bullets that will become available after the 0.007" jump in bore size, than the jump in bore size itself... grin

OK true enough.....and conceding that point, I have found that, with a 270,all you really need, is one. grin

Other than slightly higher BC numbers in 150g+ slugs, there is really NO advantage to a 7mm over a .270.

Unless you plan on ROUTINELY taking shots at game past 500 yards- 7mm slugs offer no advantage at all.

Anyone who would dump $$ into customizing a Steyr Professional and then claim no love for the cartridge for which it is chambered needs physiological counseling- not 7mm bullets.

I have not dumped any money into customizing it yet. I bought it as a .270 because I like the rifle. It already had the metal treated with a nickle type finish.

I do believe refinishing the metal IS customizing. It's sure not factory original anymore and it was not free. That was my point.

And a .280 cannot do anything a .270 can't do on game. wink

Exactly, I would learn to like it. The only people who don't like the .270 are the ones who spend too much time on the Internet.

Seems like a lot of folks on this board don't like the .270. I've just never understood why. I've never owned one that wasn't very accurate, and everything I point mine at dies. Never understood the animosity towards it.

BTW, I like the 6.5's and 7MM's too.

Doing something like that would ruin your rifle ,why? It would stress the steel,it would shoot really bad. Best thing is to love what you have and buy another rifle in the caliber you want.

Or, just open up the chamber to 270ROY. No stress, keep the finish and rifling in tact, add a bunch to your MV's, killing power and your cool factor. What is not to love?

I dunno... I disliked the .270 long before algore gave us the internet.

The thing is, I don't know why I don't like the .270. Just never have, since I was little.

I don't own a 270, but the round will hammer any game in NA with less recoil and better trajectory than many of the currently popular chamberings.

A man who owns a 270 and knows a little about bullet choice doesn't need a magnum or another bore diameter.

If I owned that great rifle, I'd buy a box or two of good ammo and spend the money on a hunting trip, and not lose any sleep thinking about it.
