Hello,
I'm on the hunt for more information! I recently aquired an old Savage Model 1899 in caliber Sav 30. I was over on another forum and the guys had some information that helped but I'm wondering if anyone else recognizes the Sav 30? One gentleman said it was a 30-30.
I found the address for John T Callahan, I'm wondering what the prices are for a factory letter if any one here knows.

Thanks alot and I look forward to reading what eveyone has to say!!

John Calahan- I believe it is $30.00.Talked to John at Fug's house on Sat. and he said it takes about 7 weeks + or -. Look at the sticky [ misc. info.] on subjects above to get address.

oldtimer303, you are still using Murray's dates, but they are horrible at pre-WWI dates. Use the American Rifleman dates from here:

http://www.savage99.com/savage99_dates.htm

That rifle should date to 1900 by serial number.

I'm also curious what model of rifle it was. What's the barrel length and shape (round, octagon, half-octagon), and is the buttplate a crescent shape, a shotgun style, or other?

And to everybody, I know we discussed an earlier rifle with serial number 15.002 that was also a SAV 30, this is another very low rifle. What was the lowest serial number for SAV 30 that we've seen?

Calhoun: Not Murray's information came from the savage99 site. But inadvertently used the upper box for checking instead of the lower with the American Rifleman dates. Guess upper box needs to be corrected also. blush

I have one 16,6XX with the 30 cal markings. Its an "A" with a crescent buttplate. Been redone sometime and is for sale. GW

it's a round barrel aproximately 24 inches with a crescent buttplate. Rifle I think is in pretty decent shape for the age. Small chip out at tang on buttstock, crack above the lever on the right side.Bore looks good at first glance, can stand a good cleaning, but rifling looks deep and sharp.

sounds like an 1899A though the barrel should likely be 26"

Post some pics and the guys might be able to give you more info.

Steve'r said he had one, 133xx. That seems very early and I don't have confirmation from him that the serial is correct.

Next I have is the 15002.

Highest are in the low 19,000 range.

Thanks, Rick.

Next generic question about 30-30, does anyone know which manufacturer was the first to use the nomenclature 30-30? I know Winchester stamped their early rifles as 30 WCF (Winchester Center Fire), and the WCF was the reason that Savage/Remington/Marlin/etc. revolted against 30 WCF as a name. Was it Marlin?

Just curious since Savage only used SAV 30 for just a few months, seems like somebody must have done something right about that timeframe.

Good read on the .30-30...thanks for the link.

I like the part about the miniture .30-30 round starting in late 1896. Savage had the same round in the .303 Sav in 1895. Must have been a good idea. wink grin

Great find, thank you! Surprising that Marlin used the 30-30 nomenclature clear back to 1895, but Savage initially used SAV 30. Wonder if they had too many customers asking if they could use UMC 30-30 ammo in their SAV 30 rifles and they switched? grin

Hmm.. might have to see if I can't google up some old customer comments and questions from 1900 in the periodicals.

Okay, hijacking the thread a bit, but thought the original poster and the rest of us would enjoy seeing what the big bore guys thought of these silly 30-30's back in 1900.

From an issue of Recreation magazine in 1900, I absolutely love this:

Ira was up by me yesterday and we had a great time at the range! Played with some oldies...some of his and some of mine including the E lightweight .300 that I mounted a Stith/alaskan on....I my take that one to the woods this fall! We shot the Savage calibers, .250, .303 and .300, and even managed to hit the paper a time or two.
Anyone that has a chance to meet up with others from the forum should take it! I have had nothing but positive experiances meeting up with the guys from this forum!
