I have a 1948 EG in .300 Savage. This gun has no brass on it. The shell counter is aluminum , and the rotor is steel. Does anyone here know the history and how many were produced of these rifles? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

hummmmm... well first off, the shell counter is part of the rotor so I am guessing they are the same metal... and it should be steel and it should be case colored.... they made a BUNCH of them... hard to say how many but I would says easily thousands... I've owned two and have seen dozen and dozen more... the guess is that brass was hard to come by and/or expensive after WWII...

Thanks Drew. I have been curious about this gun for awhile now. I have Doug Murry's book on 99's , but can't find much information. I'm guessing that after the war brass was scarce.

Welcome to the Forum, Knifeshark... Here's all of my records for that specific era plus some information given by Rick99, our local Model 99 Guru... hope this helps. By subtracting the serial number of the rifles given after the yearly date from a similar number given for a different year, you can roughly determine the number of rifles made in any given year. The serial numbers given after the year (in blue) are supposedly the last serial number range of the Model 99's manufactured in the indicated year. I believe the year and serial number range was given in "The Ninety-Nine", by Doug Murray, author of "The Ninety-Nine". 1946: 438,000-Last Utica guns were in the 447xxx range as of Nov. 1946. I think production restarted at Chicopee in 1947 at around 500,000.-Rick99) 1947: 464,000
1948: 494,000, 513996 ("It [#513996] would be a 1948 production"-Rick 99)
1949: 528,000 ("The change to the LBC with number and letter started at around 520,000 which I think was near the start of 1949".-Rick 99) 1950: 566,000 581260, 582xxxStrength & Honor... Ron T.
It's smart to hang around old guys 'cause they know lotsa stuff...

My EG is from 1950 with brass rotor and factory D&T.

it does not appear that they were all built with no brass rotors over a given periods... seemed to be hit or miss

My EG is from 1950 with brass rotor and factory D&T. What's the SN range on that one? I had one in the early 600s that was factory with EG wood on it.

Thought mine was a '48 but the serial number is 524 which puts it at 1949. It's all steel.
