In my 30-06 I have had great success with H4831sc with 180 grain bullets. Low pressure(according to Hodgdon) and great accuracy with decent velocity.

It appears in Hodgdons data that the Speer 160 grain and the 154 grain Hornady with H4831sc are lower pressure rounds as well, along with being ok on velocity. Looks like the H4831sc data is for heavier bullets per caliber in the 7mm-08. I could use the heavier bullets in my hunting applications with no problem.

Anyone try these components? I'm currently using Big Game or W760 with 145 grain Speers and 139 grain Hornadys. Shot to shot consistency is not there, and after the bullets are gone I'm switching to one of the above mentioned to give them a try.

I've tried H4831SC in the 7-08 with 160-175 grain bullets, and it worked OK.

What primer have you been using with Big Game and 760?

What barrel length and what velocity?

I've only used H4831 w/ 200 grainers in the 30-06 as the Hogdon Manual (w/ pressure data) never indicated I could get enough in the case with a 180 to better other powders like H4350.

But I'm open to a new idea.

Brad: I dunno about Chainsaw's luck but we used quite a bit of 4831sc in my wife's '06 with 180s..
Accuracy was excellent but even with an upper end of the chart load, velocity was slow...2650fps.
I blame that more on the older, well shot rifle than anything else...but velocity notwithstanding, alot of stuff died in front of that load...

That's about what I'd expect velocity-wise... and about what my 22" 308 Win does with 180's!

20 years ago I used to load 61 grains of H4831 "long cut" in a tang-safety Ruger 77 .30-06 and the 180 Partition. The load got outstanding accuracy at right around 2800 fps, but haven't tried H4831SC with 180's since Ramshot Hunter appeared.

Thanks John... I'm going to give that load a try. Been wondering about hitting 2,800 in my 23" 30-06 with a 180 and H4831sc. Even at 61.0, pressures should be fairly low.

I've used H4831, as well as Rl 19 and 7828 with 170,175s in my 7mm-08 for perfectly useful accuracy with 7 Mauser duplication speeds...2300-2400 fps.

In my '06s, I've probably burned more H4831 than anything else, most of it behind 180 and 190 grain bullets. It has always impressed me as a balanced load not especially picky about the box or tray the bullets or primers came from, or the name on the brass.

I have only used RP 9 1/2M and Fed 210 Standard primers. Both showed ok accuracy but not shot to shot consistency. (Could be me)

Brad, I used 60 grains, RP case, RP 9 1/2M primer, in a 22" barrel @2780-2800 fps consistently. Accuracy was the best I have had with that particular rifle and I used Hunter, Big Game and W760. All were good but the H4831sc was the most consistent shot after shot. Never used 4350 as I'm trying to use up others I've accumulated. Just thought I'd try it in 7mm-08.

Not that it's all that compareable but I use 4831sc exclusively in my .338 win mag with CCI mag rifle primers and the 250gr (heavy for caliber) bullets of various manufacturers. my accuracy is always a cloverleaf pattern with the holes touching each other and it has been chronographed by my very best friend to a variance of 20fps velocity in all temperatures from 10F to 90F, even with different brass, lots of powder, and bullet manufacturers. For these reasons, it is my go to powder for heavy bullet loads as it has also shown the same performance in 30-06, 264 Win Mag., 308 Win.

Flower Child, I am a believer also. As it turned my mediocre -06 into a respectable shooting iron. The .308 is one I would not have tried it in, just sayin, but with your report it would be another with heavy bullets to give it a whirl. Thanks for your post.......
