Finally got my 1st (of 3) 99 home today after waiting a year for licences. It is a 22HP 99F with all matching serial numbers; serial #: 346XXX dates it to 1935. I will post pics shortly just struggling with photobucket.

Hey Jed, I'll take your word on the lateness of this particular rifle. I know absolutely squat about 99's and lever actions for that matter. My son, now 14, liked a 250-300 which we looked at (for Springbok hunting)and that is where my path started. I've had licences approved for 3 99's but the 250 & 300 are still in police custody so I'll probably only get them in about a months time (bought them in August 2010).

Nice looking rifle. (Too bad someone drilled/tapped it though.) I will guess that it will do nicely on your smaller antelope.

All 3 of the rifles I've purchased are d&t'ed, not many options in this neck of the woods. All the rifles are going to see regular range use and at least 1 hunt annually. Here are some more images, the sling swivel on the barrel looks original, any comments?

Congrats on grabbing a great shooter. Almost all 22HP's are takedowns, a solid frame actually commands a pretty hefty premium just because they are so rare. Also, most 22HP's show up in the 1912-1919 range, after WWI the 250-3000 and then the 300 Savage became far more popular. Finding one from the 30's is very uncommon, though they were offered.

You'll enjoy it, they are fun to shoot.

Attached below are my 3 99's, not collectors but all mine! 22Hp, 250, 300 (top down)

I'm planning on drawing out all the oil & gunk from the 300, building a wooden spacer & fitting a butt plate & grip cap. Refinishing the woodwork with a matt oil finish. No work to be done to the metal, just clean & lube. Trying to keep it as close to original as possible.

The 22HP & 250 have both got 21" barrels, the 300 a 23" (measured to where they screw into the receiver, so overall about an inch longer).

All 3 rifles have matching serial numbers for their respective bits & pieces!

Don't know what else to ad, ask & I will answer!

All three look like they will be excellent hunters. The 22HP and the 250 appear to have been reblued (levers included). You will love the way they handle and feel. Congratulations!
