The elk appear to be thriving in Ky. I found sign on my property in July. The cool thing is, THIS IS 40 MILES FROM THE NEAREST RELEASE POINT! In less than a year.

If this keeps up they will have to rethink the Eastern, no hunt, buffer zone. My friend and I run 100 head of cattle on this land. I'm not going to give up my grazing for free. If the elk are going to live on my land then I should be able to buy a tag and take one, after the herd numbers are high enough, of course.

They had a lottery for 100 tags this year!

Terry8mm, there is no longer a buffer zone for elk. With this season if you reg for the lottery draw or buy a $10 permit you may kill an elk out side of the elk zone during deer season. Check out the KY fish and game website. I am going to try a get an out of zone elk this fall!

There ain't no Eastern buffer zone no more...the reason (one of them) is below (in my post).

Yep. So much so that I can't figure whether I want Virginia to re-think their rules/regs and re-introduce Elk here and encourage the repopulation from the KY herd...

Or, continue as they are doing right now, which is to let us VA hunters pop any elk that wanders into VA during deer season and check it in on one of our deer tags. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Decisions, decisions...

Seriously, I am ALL for re-introducing elk back here in the East.

Heck, for that trade, I'd even take wolves, some griz, cougars, bison, etc. On the condition that they'd all be huntable as soon as the population got high enough. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Our place is in Whitley County near Williamsburg and there's no doubt in my mind that we'll have elk on it in my lifetime. Elk have been sighted from main street in Corbin!

As far as details they are here

http://www.kdfwr.state.ky.us/elkinfo.asp?lid=1141&NavPath=C151C159

and they list the counties in the elk restoration zone.

Magnificent animals aren't they?

Wouldn't it be great if they could go all the way to the Atlantic like they used to? They are speading into my neighborhood now - and we're excited. That ranchers sure don't like them though, and that may limit their expansion.

Them, and Caribou - to my way of thinking the most beautiful racks. I don't know why - but the horns on sheep that so stirred Jack O'Connor leave me cold - I'll take antlers any day!

Yeah, but, where are the elk in Corbin originating Ky or Tn? Not that I care. I want BOTH states to have free roaming huntable populations - SOON!

grimel,
Not sure those ungulates recognize that dashed line running across Clinch mountain! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Maybe we need to paint a big orange "T" on the ones coming from the south so we can keep it straight?

If it will keep those Kentuckians from shooting "my" elk I'm all for it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Never ceases to amaze me how some wildlife managemnent monkey thinks he can outline an area, release critter X into it and think it won't expand it's range. First rule of critter managment - critters go where the food is. Second rule of critter managment - critters head for water and cover near the food.

They've stopped releasing more elk down here. It seems they (the elk) aren't cooperating and staying in the little circle TWRA drew on the map. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> Oh, well, at least they are expanding on their own. Soon, very soon we'll have at least a drawn hunt.

Might have to build a 338-06 just in case I get lucky.

Grimel, I wish you luck getting drawn. I continue to try and draw in KY but the odds aren't great. I think once we have a points system at least then I know I'll eventually get a hunt.

I've been in Tx. and haven't checked the new regs. If the buffer zone is going to be permitted, I'm sittin' on a gold mine!
We've got almost 3000 acres, with about 1,000 of this being reclaimed mountaintop strip mines. My son-in-law saw cow elk on my place last weekend, about 12 head.

Those Corbin Elk DENY ANY association with Tenn and above all else the Vols <Big Grin> They told me to type that for them in their defense BTW! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
