Has anybody had any experience with the Barnes X in the old 30-30? Loads? Game shot?

Mr. 4X4Sneak,
We have used the 165gr Barnes XFN in our pre-64 Ackley Improved 94 with excellent success on Moose and Caribou. The load is AA2495BR 31.0gr at 2230fps 15ft from muzzle. This load is fine in our gun but recommend the charge be reduced and worked up following established reloading practice.

Thanks WindWalker. I did not realize there was a 165. I had thought there was only a 150.

I am curious as I use my Trapper as a back-up elk rifle and my current load is the 170 Hornady Interlock.

I don't shoot too much factory stuff. Do you use the partitions?

Mr. 4X4Sneak,
It is my understanding they discontinued making them a couple of years ago. Wish we had laid in a supply and would have if we had only known. Have not used the 150gr.

Okay, stupid question here. Got a chance to pick up a pre-1900 Winchester 94 in 30 WCF. Gray rat with stock all bubba'd up. Is this really the same ammo as a 30-30? Is it safe to shoot modern 30-30 ammo through an 1896 rifle? Be a fun shooter and project gun, as well as hopefully teaching the kids a bit of respect and appreciation for older guns.

30 WCF = .30-30

Factory ammo should be safe to shoot in that rifle, as it is loaded to pressure levels specifically held down for those older guns.

Have a good 'smith check it out to make sure that it's up to firing, and have fun.

X bullet in 150 makes deeper hole n anythin xcept maybe hardcasts.
X not always most accurate.
NP shoots better for most.
30WCF backup, X or NP best choices. Factory NP loads expensive n hard to find. Don think X is factory loaded.
Old Rem Core lock 170s r surprisingly good if can't get either above.
Good luck, good shootin
