am looking for 170 grn loads with either varget or rl15 so as to use same powder i am using in another rifle . i have to drive a long distance to buy powder and want to buy i bulk if i can find good loads . have been using h335 with 150 speer but the bullet seems to overexpand at short range and not penetrate well am thinking of using hornady flatpoint as it seems to be more readily available but am open to any bullet .

rcpigg65,
I shoot 35.5 gns of rl-15 w/ a 170gn. NP and cci-250 primers and a good roll crimp in rem. nickel brass. Ive got an old 26" octagon Win.94 w/ a lyman peep. this load is very accurate, penetration and expansion is excellent in deer and hogs inside of 175 yds. so far. This load clocks 2328 in my rifle.
Good luck with Yours. Gunner

I use 34 grains RL15 under 170 Hornady FN in my 336A 24" barrel for about 2300 fps. I presume we're talking 30 - 30.

I'm using 32.0 gr. Varget with the Remington 170 currently, and it seems to work well.

I have been hunting this year with factory 170 grain Remington Corelokt Hollow points. The 336 Marlin I am shooting them in seems to like them very much, although I have to admit that I haven't shot them past 100 yards on paper. On-game performance on the two deer I have shot with this load has been stellar. So much so, that I fully understand the "fuss" about the .30-30 being a whitetail cartridge. It simply works.
