I was working up some loads for my 308 using Hornady match brass and 165 nosler ballistic tips and Varget powder. 3 rounds each for 44, 45, 45.5, 46, grains of powder. 46 gr gave me 2720 fps. 44 gr. gave 2570 fps. Everything else was in between. None of the rounds showed signs of excess pressure (flat primers, extractor marks, difficult bolt lift etc.)
However, one of the hornady match brass cracked the sidewall out (2/3rds down the side wall from just below the shoulder/wall junction) at 45.5 grains of powder and I immediately felt debris/gas slap me in the face (had glasses on thankfully). This brass has only had one loading prior. I know it's fairly light compared to my LC match brass but I didn't think it would be that weak.
For those experienced loading Hornady match brass, what is your opinion of the stuff and has this ever happened to you.

I've used it for the 300 wby. Bought a bunch years ago when I could get 50 cases for $23!!!
It was excellent brass as far as uniformity went. Neck tension seemed really consistant and runnout of virgin brass was almost perfect. BUT, I did find the primer pockets went to heck quickly compared to wby brass at the same velocity. I suspect that after weighing the cases perhaps they were made by federal but can't be sure. I don't think hornady makes it's own brass and I'm guessing they go to fed, win or rem and try to keep tolerances higher than bulk by the original maker.
That case split is sure a wierd one. I've seen necks split and of course have seen case head separation but never a sidewall blow out.

Was the crack longitudinal or circumferential?

Longitudinal, probably ran half way down the case wall from top towards bottom.

I pick up a lot of range brass locally... if it is stamped Hornady..... I leave it for another "too cheap" range member...
which we have no shortages of...

Hornady does manufacture their own brass. I have personally witnessed the process from start to finish. Very cool to see.

I don't think Hornady makes it's own brass A couple of years ago I purchased a few bags of Winchester 45-70 unprimed cartridges. Each bag contained one or two primed Hornady cartridges that were also about 1/8" shorter than the Winchesters.
