I'm considering another 99 purchase, but this one has a pachmayr side mount, and I'm wondering if a smith would have an efffective way of making the holes disappear as part of a refurbish?

A really good smith can make them ALMOST invisible, but it's a fairly costly thing, and when you get done you'll still have a refinished gun with plugged holes. I'd just wait and buy one without the holes.

After filling (welding) the holes when the area is rebluded the filled hole and surrounding metal seem to never take bluing the same. Filled holes often seem to be lighter or darker that the surrounding area. GW

My 250 R had a side mount, don't know why because it was drilled and tapped. I just had the gun shop put a couple screws in the holes so the don't stand out, Joe.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

I just bought a early prewar 99RS with holes in side. They have screws filling them, and I'm not going to mess up what's left of the original blue to try to hide them. They are just part of the character..

Like it having a takedown barrel. Savage, never say never.
