My nephew(13 yo) and I were able to get out for opening weekend in Kentucky. We were set up in a double tree stand in an open field on my father's farm. We were actually sitting in his stand, but he had to go to a wedding and wasnt coming up until Saturday night.

We saw a doe at first light who crossed the field. About a hour later, a nice buck crosses the field at the far end. It was only in the field for a second, and a few seconds later, we saw why. Two beagle dogs came running across the field on the trail of the buck.

He was disappointed because that was what he wanted. About 9 oclock, this deer came out of the end of the field about 430 yards away and was running directly towards us across the field. We both get our guns up and I tell him to wait for it to stop. When it crosses the dam on the back of the pond, I yell to try to stop the deer. No stopping him, he is on a mission.

The buck then catches our scent since the wind is blowing about 20mph from our back and turns to go up the hill from our stand. I tell him to shoot (75 yards) and he makes a great running shot with his .243 Win. The buck goes right down. I look over and he is shaking like a leaf on a tree. We are very excited at this point.

We then wait about 30 mins in the stand. We get down to find his deer.

The particulars: Remington 770 youth in .243 Winchester. 85g Hornady Interbond with IMR7828SSC. The bullet entered the right spine, destroyed the spine, penetrated up through the chest to take out the opposite side lung and exited the front of the opposite chest. Half dollar entrance since spine hit with dime size exit. We were very please with performance.

Great job!

I'd rather have a bad day hunting than a good day working!

Thank you for sharing your nephew's first buck hunt with us, I always enjoy these threads.

Please pass along hearty congratulations to him on getting the job done on a tough shot - and a nice buck to boot!

I'll send you a tip of the hat too sir, for your part in making sure this hunt happened. Well done sir.

Thanks again and all the best to you both in your upcoming hunts.

Regards,
Dwayne

Rong,

His dad stepped up to the plate and we took his deer to the taxidermist. He is pretty excited to have a deer on the wall next to his dad.

It is going to be close, but his might even be bigger than his dad's.
