My father has a Winchester Pre 64 88 in 308. For some reason the first time the lever is worked it will not cock the firing pin. After the first lever swipe it will cock correctly unless you set the gun down for a period of time then it will not recock until the second lever swipe.
What is wrong with this thing??
Thanks in advance!

Take the action out of the stock and see if it does the same. If not something is interfering and causing this. Also while action is out of the stock, spray it down with a good cleaner to remove all old oils and accumulated gunk. Lightly re oil it and see if it stays cocked?

Sounds like a problem of hardened oil/ grease in the action. Give the action a good cleaning and new oil.

You may have a broken firing pin too. The 88's will break firing pins occasionally. Will it fire a loaded round when the pin is cocked? These guns are pretty complicated and parts are scarce, so be careful if you start taking the gun apart. It could be a dirt and oil issue that has dried and hardened too. Daryl.

Perhaps it's too late, but here are some lines worth reading about the M88: http://www.gunreports.com/special_r...ever-action-rifle2480-1.html?CMP=OTC-RSS
