Its a fox. went looking for bear, quail an grouse the other day. And with my luck when I carry the 20 gauge with birdshot I see bears. And when I carry the 243 I see quail. So I was carrying the 243 on my back and the shotgun in my hand.

Something caught my eye at the edge of a meadow about 150 yards away. I could see an outline of a head looked almost like a cougar head to me. So easing the shotgun down to the ground and the 243 to my shoulder I put the cross hairs on it.

cougars dont have a pointy nose an ears. Its a coyote. Well coyotes arent red either. So here I was trying to justify why I should shoot this fox. (I didnt come up with a reason so I didnt shoot) When the fox goes flying across the meadow, and starts running circles and going crazy.

I couldnt figure out what had gotten into this fox untill I saw the jack rabbit he was chasing. Putting down the rifle I dug my binoculars outta my pack and settled in for a show. I got up the binoculars just in time to see him catch it. He brought it to the shade where he ate most of it and then settled in for a nap in the shade under a bush.

I just made a wide circle around him an carried on with my hunt. Even though the only thing that got killed was a couple of grouse an 3 quail. That was one of the most interesting encounters with a fox or coyote that I have ever had.

Any other interesting expieriences that have happend to you guys?

I was driving I-64 heading to Missouri from KY, for deer season (like I do, every year). When I got near the Booneville exit in southern Indiana, I saw something messing around in the median, it was a coyote trying to catch a groundhog, and it was a pretty even match, from what I could tell. I was zipping along about 70mph, and couldn't tell who was going to win, but the groundhog looked pretty tuckered out, and I suppose he lost it in the end. I wouldn't have known which one to shoot at, if the situation were different, but I suppose the coyote would have caught the first bullet, and if time allowed, the hawg would have caught the next. Pretty interesting to watch, in any event.

Back when fur in NM was still bringing good money, a friend and my self would usually go calling all weekend. We was headed out to my granddads ranch early one morning, we I see 2 coyotes that are hung up to each other. Just like 2 dogs. They were in the bar ditch off of a main road. They tried to run, but that would not work. Not wanting to have to sew up any holes, I killed both of them with a shovel handle. It was a good day, didnt even have to blow a call, of fire a rifle, and already had 2 good yotes in the back of the truck. Im sure some on this board will get fired up about this, but I would do it again, only after that, I started carrying a .22 in the truck.

Boise, I cant remember, it was 18 years ago, I had just gotten my drivers license. It was quite a site, boy those were the days, we would usually kill 3 to 5 yotes, every Sat morning, just driving out to the ranch, wish it were like that now. I can remember ditching school, just to go calling, Mom was not real happy when the school called, and then she called my Grand Dad and found out that I was out there. I wish he was still around, I think I would ditch work a couple of days just go revist those days.

Which one did you whomp first, the male or the female? At least they both died with smiles on their faces.....LOL! What a way to go. Back in the 70's, I killed a buck that was mounting a doe.

I think I hit the male first, I still cant believe that I was able to do this, At the time I figured about the time I whacked one of them, they would come lose, but they never did. Even after loading them in the pick up. I had to cut the males tally whacker off, so I could seperate them to skin. It was just one of those things, that you would have a hard time believing, if you didnt witness it. I still shake my head when I think about it.

Two with a shovel beats my one with a 4-wheeler. Makes me grin just to think of it. I knew what I was going to do and at about 10yds I think he figured it out too. Whew, that was fun!
