Mark, 8x57 brass is about as easy to find as anything else on the planet. It ain't pricey, either. Dies are cheaper than 8-06 dies, too. I am pretty sure that 8mm Mouser dies will neck size 30/06 brass pretty well. I don't have special dies for my 338/8mm RemMag or several other wildcats I have run. I HAVE to say open it up, I am an unrepentant speed whore! If some is good, more is better, and too much is just right

I'd keep it as a 8x57. Excellent cartridge. As posted, brass and components are readidly available and reasonable. Why spend the time reforming brass when you could be shooting.
Aim for the exit hole.

Well I did shoot it and sight it in at fifty yards. It's an inch high and dead strait on. I would have put a pic on but I got busy making deer fajitas and a pot of split pea soup and when I heard it raining my target had already fallen off the board. It grouped three you could cover with a dime, and if I could hold it better the group would have been better. The longest shot I will get in the woods will be 50 yards if I'm lucky. Let's see, New Remington brass, 185 gr. Rem bullet, 43 gr. of IMR 4064, Win. LR primers. Slowest load in the Nosler guide, but it shoots good!

There is nothing wrong with the good ol 8mm mauser. Nice rifle too by the way, you did very well....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Your right 185, dont know how that happened! It shoots well, saw 5 deer out in the woods today, no horns. My Buddy from old contract showed up today and we're going to give them a crack tomorrow!

Use it AS IS for now. Down the road re-barrel to 280AI.

Leave it as as a 8x57 JS I looked for one like that for years in nice shape and all I ever found was tired ones or very expensive ones.3-4 years back I picked up a close out M700 8x57 Classic NIB for $348, tuned the trigger pull and worked up a load with 150 gr Horn SP and r-15 at about 2750 fps kills as good as any 30 cal load. In Nosler #6 they list both the 8x57JS and the 8-06 there is less than 100fps difference with 180 gr loads at max and the 8x57 has a 70 fps advantage over the 8-06 with 200 gr bullets. sounds strange but that is what #6 says. I also will eventually work with 150 gr Sierras,180 NBT's, and 185 gr Corelokts. I am sure they will work fine too. Magnum Man

Definitely leave it 8x57. I have a 8x57, and i can't say ammunition or components have ever been a problem. It is every bit as good a hunting cartridge as the 30-06, especially with heavier bullets at ranges less than 250 yards. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with the 8mm-06 either, but 8x57 is a great cartridge that should get more love. It remains very popular outside of north america.

As it is, I see no reason to rechamber or even rebarrel this rifle. Its charm is the receiver site instead of another scoped rifle. My Dad tells a story of how he built my late Uncle Jack a VZ 24 in 8mm/06 with a [bleep] stock and LYMAN receiver sight. Uncle Jack took it to Colorado and while standing in the bed of a pick up back in 1967 dropped two Mule deer at 250 yards as they made their way down a ravine. He was shooting the 225 grain bullet RN bullet by Speer. My Dad said Uncle jack loved the rifle and kept it for years. I have heard the story my whole life and have always looked for a rifle like this and never found it to be vary important to pursue the effort. When I looked at this rifle first I thought of, Oh look a donor rifle for $200.00. Then when I saw how much work was put into it I thought, a new rifle with no scope. I have the FN in 284 Win., 257 Robts AI, Rem VTR in 308 Win, Ruger M77 in 358 Win. L61R in 338/06 AI and could go on. I have been wanting a rifle with open sights to hunt in the woods with for some time. Looks like I found it!

I think you made the right decision. I really like the 8x57, and see it more or less as a .308 on steroids. Brass is easy to find now, but several years back, when the Yugo M48's were coming in, and cheap, I bought an RCBS form die so that I could take 25-06, 270 or 30-06 brass and make 8x57 brass to my heart's content. I loved shooting those 8's. I had good luck with the 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips.

Hunted with it this morning saw a lot of does but no bucks. Going to go over to a different zone and kill a doe.
