I haven't had much time to hunt this year due to other obligations. I decided this morning that I would shoot any decent buck or doe that I saw. I sat down and got settled in at 06:25. At 06:45 I heard a twig snap over my right shoulder. I looked back and saw a buck slowly walking around from behind me at about 30 yards. I could tell he was a decent deer, so I decided to take him. I got turned in the stand and cocked the hammer on my Grandfathers Marlin 336 .35 Rem. When the deer took a step and cleared some brush at 17 yards, I squeezed the trigger. He went down like he had been hit by the Hammer of Thor, never even twitched. I climbed down and to my delight it turned out to be an 11 pointer. The shot had entered high on the left shoulder and passed through the right lung, exiting just behind the right shoulder. The 200 grain Cor-lokts did the job. I was thrilled to have taken such a handsome deer with a gun that my Grandfather left to me.

Nice buck, shot with a great old rifle and caliber. Is that scope an old Weaver K 1.5 X 4?

damned sure beats sitting on top of an old windmill with a bow and arrow all day, to pass on a couple of youngsters near dark. Looks like you also may have good squirrel hunting close at hand. Do you marlinize any of them?

The scope is a Weaver V4.5 II W. It is a variable from 1.5 to 4.5 with the wideview eyepiece.

he had been hit by the Hammer of Thor If you could have used the terms "boiler room" and "bang-flop", you'd a had the hat-trick of metaphors. Nice deer, bro.

Man, those .35 Rems do the job! Looks like over penetration though. Went through the deer and cut that old tree in half. Beautiful deer and Grandfather's rifle makes it even more special. Congrats.

I thought that is what that scope was. I have the very same scope on a 12 ga. slug gun. Pretty tough old scopes. Mine has taken the heavy recoil of hundreds of 12 ga. slugs and still holds zero. I also have a scar on the bridge of my nose from the scope that I will take to the grave with me. I was testing sabot slugs in my then brand new Hastings rifled barrel. I got careless and got hit hard. Broke my glasses and nearly broke my nose. Again congrats.
