Twas a sad day when I had to sell my last model 99 a couple of years ago. It was a Takedown perch belly stock 250/3000 that was well worn and tired but you folks helped me get it up and running again.
I am back into old Savage riflery again, I just traded my way into another takedown model 99, and again in my all time favorite Savage model 99 caliber - 250/3000! This one is in good shape, still tight with good rifling for a change, and comes with Stith Mounts and a Lyman Alaskan 4x scope. Should be a lot of fun to shoot and hunt with.
The serial number on this one puts it at a 1920 year of manufacture. Will it still have a 1 in 14 twist in that year or had Savage gone to a 1 in 10 by that time? If I have to run 87 grain bullets then run them I shall, but I am hoping that I can shoot the 100's for deer.
Thanks again for the help on the last one, and thanks in advance for info on this one. Here's hoping that I can keep it in the corral for a while.

They didn't go to a 1 in 10" twist until 1960. The commercial ammunition usually is accurate enough for deer hunting, but if you want the best accuracy you might try the Speer 87gr Hot Core. Jmho.

Don't be afraid to try 100 grain bullets. I have a takedown 250-3000 from 1926 with 1 in 14 twist that I almost sold. It would only do about 3" - 4" groups with the Speer 87gr Hot Core. I tried 4 or 5 different powders and a couple different primers and couldn't get any better. It shoots factory Winchester Silvertip 100 grains into 1". I finally tried the Hornady 100 grain bullets and am getting 0.75" groups.

My 250 with 1 in 14 twist shoots 100grs. just fine. Tried 117's and they tumble. Just try it and see what it does. Jim

Get some Speer 100 grain hot cores and they will likely work. Speer has always worked best for me in both 87 and 100 grainers.

is it the opinion of the forum that the 87 gr. pills will work just as well in the newer 1:10 twist or not so much? I shot both 87 and 100 grain Speers in my 1970's Saddle Guns and I couldn't see any difference. I believe that O'Connor's opinion was that you couldn't over stabilize a bullet.

+1, from everything I've heard, 87gr will stabilize in a 1 in 10" twist. Whether your gun likes it or not is a different question.

OK, I will try some 100gr bullets but still have all of my 87's from the last rifle I sold so chambered. Thanks, everyone. I can hardly wait until this one comes IN!

I had a takedown that shot well under MOA (3 shot groups) with 100-grainers. Speer Hot-Cor was good, Rem CoreLokt was better. The Sierra 100 flat base gave me my tightest group; my best was 7/16ths of an inch for three shots at 100 yards. That rifle did not love the Hornady 100 as much. And it shot the Hornady 87 only about as well as the 100 Speer. All groups were shot with max loads of Reloder 15, brand of brass didn't matter; I used Rem and Win. brass and Rem 9 1/2 primers. I got groups under an inch with a volumetric load of RL 15 as well; I used the 2.5 cc dipper supplied with the Lee dies. Heaped the dipper, tapped it 3 times, struck off the overflow with a credit card. Charges averaged around 35.5 grains.

Good info! Thanks a bunch. If anyone has some old 25 cal 100gr Silvertips they might sell I sure would like to know about them. I looked and I only have about 20 left and would love to use them. Don't know if they are readily available anymore or not. They look REALLY cool sitting atop a 250/3000 case

75g Nosler BT and Re-15 (..can't remember how much) will shoot under 1-1/4" 100 yd 5-shot groups consistently in my mid 50's EG (best group was under 7/8"). I'm about to try the same medicine in my new 1933 H

Like the problems with modern 70 grain bullets in the HP, 100 grain .25s that are long spitzers/spire points will probably be a crap shoot for accuracy. Seek out shorter, more rounded-nosed, designs and I think success will be yours. It's the length of a bullet not its weight that determines whether it'll stabilize in a given twist.

Understood, which is why I have great hope for the 100gr Silvertips. They are more round than pointed. I might even try some 100gr RN bullets.

The 100 gr RN Rem CL shoot very well. No longer made. If you find a source for any RN 100's newly made, I'd sure like to know.
I can help you out with the 100 gr silvertips.I can spare a box. Send me a PM if interested.

Well there you go. Anybody with original Savage 100 grain ammo is well advised to go out and shoot it up!
