Can anyone provide in fo on the Herter's gunshop installed variable choke? similar to the dial type vari-choke of the late 50's, but I want to replace with something I can shoot the new hard shot with, restore & put back into service.... Nice first year Mod 48 Sportsman, but Dad had Herter's install the choke back about 1959. This gun has had probably 20 cases of use but is still sound except for a crack in the wrist of the stock I don't want to repair (stock already ordered from Boyd's)
Thanks, MartyC

Yes, sweated on, a common gunsmithing task at the time. They work but not with steel shot though the marked settings aren't necessarily what you'd see on a pattern board. I know they will handle a Forster-type slug at IC. Don't know what else there is to say about them.

Send the barrel to Poly-Choke. You will get a proven, steel shot proof choke that works very well.

Even if the choke is OK, I think the barrel won't take steel shot, if that is your choice. Other shot types should be fine. Good for you to keep your Pop's shotgun up and running.

Everything you now do is something you have chosen to do. Some people don't want to believe that. But if you're over age twenty-one, your life is what you're making of it. To change your life, you need to change your priorities.
