Guys, while I have enjoyed reading all the comments and really appreciate the opinions...I went totally the other way...not a bad direction but defintley not what I had planned on
Today I put a Sako L579 Forester .243win in layaway. I stopped by the shop to look at a .257ai the guy had and fell in love with the Sako Traitor! But... do post some pics, just the same... FC

ky--Sako, nice step up. .243 goes pretty well w/ the .30-06.

He can always rebarrel it. Or is the action too short?

Haha. This will be my 4th .243. Never was a big fan of the cartridge but after handling the sako, I really don't care. Worse comes to worse I could always go .260. That would be slick on the sako. But I'll just most likely keep her a .243. I've killed enough deer with the cartridge to know its effectiveness

The perfect deer rifle happens to be whatever I happen to be hunting with at the moment. Should you choose the 257 Roberts you will always wonder if there isn't something better. If you choose the 7x57 you will know there are none better. Some are equal, but none better.

Deer is the biggest thing I'd ever use the rifle for..... Don't underestimate either one. I have taken caribou with the Roberts and moose with the 7x57. If you limit your shots to a reasonable range they will easily do the job on larger game.

I never think about a rifle anymore for a desired Caliber, I just think another barrel...particularly since I got into this switch barrel world...
257 Roberts and 220 Swift are two cartridges on my short list of rounds to play with...
I have a pair of 7 x 57s...a Ruger and a Featherweight..( which gets pulled from the gun cabinet for deer hunting a lot)
I have a pair of 6.5 x 55s in the same, Ruger and Featherweight..
Then the 260s, Ruger and Model 70...
my favorite cartridge tho, is the difference between the 7 x 57 or 257 Roberts decision... a 6.5 x 57...
My only dilemma is the time and opportunity is not available to spend out hunting and using them all each year...

I think how important antlers are to you is a consideration. It took several deer taken with my Bob to figure out that the 100 Hornady and the 115 Partition were the only bullets I trusted on deer and even then the damage done to the vitals wasn't nearly as severe as with the 270s, 7mms, and 30s Ive used.
For meat deer the .257 is fine but for trophy hunting I'd feel much better with the Mauser.
Only a fool would sell an accurate .30-06

I have two 7x57's that cover almost all hunting, including game a lot larger than deer. I can't see much reason to go .257, if I wanted varmint/deer capability, .243 is fine. Deer are pretty easy to flatten with any decent rifle, even .22-250's and Swifts work well. Choose your shot according to what you're carrying. With a 7x57 and TTSX kill them from any angle.

I don't hunt. But if I did -- I would want this in a Featherweight proportioned model:

Easy to fall for the little Forrester 243. I got one years ago as a do all rifle. I have two zeros taped to the stock - squirells to deer loads 16 clicks apart. Sweet little gun (though the CZ will out shoot it.) I mostly switched to 6,5 Swedes, which are really great, maybe better, only they're heavier and deer don't notice the difference. Hopefully it will never become a choice between them. Until you find a nice 7x57 enjoy your fine rifle!
