I currently own a 204...223..22-250..243...260...____...300wsm....375 H&H..444. I am looking to fill that gap with either a 280 or 7mm RM. If I need to knock over a big muley or elk.. the 300wsm will be used. The 7mm-08 is not in the group of what I am looking for because I have the 260. The caliber I will get will probably be filled with and Encore barrel. I do reload, so ammo availability is not a concern. The caliber will be used for western hunts on antelope, whitetails, or medium muleys.

I'd go with a 280 Rem.

What will a 280/7RM do on the light end that a .260 wont do? What will it do on the heavy end that your .300 WSM wont do?

T'aint no gap that needs fillin' in your arsenal :D, but I've never talked a person out of buying a gun so....

.280, just cuz.

The barrel I am looking at is a 28" fluted Encore Prohunter in a 280. With the 4" longer I should be able to approach 7mm RM velocities without the added recoil and muzzle blast.

Archie.. if you noticed I have a .020" spacing in my guns that are 300 and less. So I do have a "gap" grin

If your going to use a 28 inch barrel it screams 7mm mag.

If you want to "approach" 7RM numbers, then get a 7RM. You'll have to push that .280 HARD to get there, and the 7RM will do it just fine. Of course, the .280 ballistics are good enough w/o comparing to 7RM, I'd just load up the .280 Rem to reasonable velocity and kill stuff w/o worrying about what the 7RM would have done differently.

Sounds like you "need" a Kimber Montana 280AI to fill that gap - and I do mean gap!

Not a single .284...A truck could drive through that "gap"!

You also need a 7mm-08, BTW...grin.

You are small bore heavy, and big bore light. In fact I don't see a Dangerous game caliber in the pile. If you get yourself a 458 something or 'nuther, then you will have lots MORE gaps to fill! Fun, fun, fun! smile

Seriously, you could use a 375 H&H, 416 Rigby or 458 Lott, but not on an Encore. Needs to be a real gun.

By the way, you might want to be more careful about how you word your thread titles, sounded kinda gay when I first read it smile Ick!

The areas that I hunt don't have critters that will eat me. The one 375 I have was an Encore barrel I got cheap for plinking crazy. I really don't need big bore stuff. The 444 is used in heavy woods hunting whitetail.

The title to this thread started out as "filling my gap".. meaning filling the gap I have in rifle calibers. Not sure who changed the title to "filling my pants" mad
