If you plan to do any calling I'd look at a 1.5x6, 2x7 or 2.5x10. When you have coyotes or other fast moving and inclose critters the 40'+ FOV is really nice to have yet you still have the higher power for a long shot.

If your just taking targets of opertunity and smaller critters like ground squirels and ground hogs are in the picture one of the higher power variables would work well 4x12,4x16 etc.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Fotis,
I have a 3-9x40 on a light walking varmit 223 and have no trouble seeing and hitting ground squirrels out past 300yds with it (about the limit of vision in the terrain I usually walk in), and usually leave it set between 4 & 6 power.
Your 3-9 compact sounds about right to me - Give it a try. You might save yourself some money on a new scope smile.
On 3 power there is plenty of field of view for up close coyotes, etc as well.

Never could see much sense in wanting a light walking rifle and then putting a big scope on it crazy.

Good luck whatever you decide to do................

For coyotes the 6X is plenty. But it's not enough for gophers at a quarter mile.

The 4.5-14 is nice for those long range gophers, but not as friendly to use as the 6X.

I am going with a 3.5-10X40 for those reasons for mine, it seems to me the best compromise if you are shooting at big and little critters, up close and far away.

I use a Redfield 4-12 on my Cooper sporter in 223, and IMO it is a nice fit for both the rifle and power. I generally use it at 10X for gophers and PD's, but for calling I set it at 6X.
IMO it is a nice compromise in a power range.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

For a walkin gun,,,a 4-12 would be my choice, likely a Nikon

I'm debating on a 4 x 12 or 3 x 9 one of those with that optional reticle for my 223 ADL..

I tried the Accua-Range reticle, and for me, it was just to busy. There were too many things interfering with the image. Try to take a look at one before deciding on your reticle choice.

I wish that they would offer it with a reticle similar to the long range Leupold reticle where you have a couple of small bars for hold-overs. I ended up selling it and going with the standard duplex.

I went with the 4-12 to have a little more magnification for longer shots, it is only 1/2 oz heavier than the 3x9. The 4-12 does give up some field of view, however I have not found that to be an issue.

Since you already have a 3-9 why not put it on and see how it works out. If you find out 9x isn't enough you can always buy something with more magnification.

Drover, I actually like the Accurange reticle... the main thing I love is that big circle/cross hair reticle..

I have those on a batch of Shotgun scopes with that reticle, mounted on centerfires... albeit in 1.5 x 4 power...

still that reticle is easy to see, took a deer right at 300 yds with one on 4 power and I wasn't handicapped and that reticle made sight acquisition very easy...

Seafire,
I had read good things about the Accu-Range on various posts and decided to give it a try. I may have been predisposed to dislike the reticle, I have always used either a dot (for target shooting) or a duplex for hunting and for me there was just too much going on with the Accu-Range.

keeki,
It isn't as bad as it looks, I do use my rifles but am careful with them. That particular Cooper is my truck gun, it lives in the back seat of my outfit, in an unzipped case, so that it is accessible but is still somewhat protected.
