Hillbillybear, he's a great guy. Not just because he gave me a couple rifles, but because he's one of my closest friends. I'm worried about him right now because he's going in for prostate surgery on Friday. The doctors keep saying it's routine surgery and he only has to stay in the hospital overnight, but I won't sleep much until it's over. As you can imagine, my wife and her mother are both a bit frazzled right now because of worrying. It'll be a big relief if everything's going well come Saturday and Sunday.
My father-in-law told me when he gave me the .300 H&H that I could only have it if I promised to use. Hopefully, next month I'll have pictures of a nice Utah muley with a .30 caliber hole in him.....

Sorry to hear about the surgery. I hope all goes well for him, I'll put in some extra prayers.
Best Wishes, HBB

The day this thread was started, I took my first shot in Africa with my 1952 M70 chambered in 300 H&H... The next day with the same rifle...

I just came into a 1953 M70 in 300H&H. It belonged to my uncle, he pasted away about 10yrs. ago and my cousin and I lost track of each other. Anyway, because of health reasons he is passing the rifle on to me. I owned a pre 64 M70 in 300 H&H about 30yrs. ago and always regretted selling it.
I remember hunting with my uncle and cousin and seeing this rifle in action. My uncle was always very careful with it and cousin Jim says it's still about 95% new condition. He did say last time he shot the rifle it shot a 5shot 1 1/2in. group at 200yds. Pete

Beautiful trophies. I took this one three weeks ago with my Remington Classic 300 H&H.

This has been a great thread to read! D Phillips, those are some nice African trophies! My love affair with the 300 H&H started with a 1965 Remington arm catalog. I fell in love with the long sloping H&H cartridges. I also have an old Western Ammunition handbook that had a section about the 300 H&H. While the book doesn't have a copyright date on it, I'm pretty sure it is late 1940's. I acquired my 300H&H, a pre-64 Winchester model 70 about 5 or 6 years ago. The serial number indicates it is a 1952 vintage. I found it on GunsAmerica. It didn't have a scope or mounts, and the stock was in fair condition. The length of pull was cut down almost 2 inches, with an old Pachmeyer (sp) rubber pad on it that had become stiff as a board. It also had a very sloppy glass bedding job on the rear of the stock around the trigger. When fired the trigger would hang up in the glass bedding and would not pull for the second shot. You had to take the stock apart to get the trigger to reset. I stripped and refinished the stock with Birchwood Caseys Tru-Oil. A little work with a rasp and sandpaper cleared up the glass bedding and trigger problem. I put on a set of Leupold QR bases and rings and a Leupold 1.5x5 VX-III scope. I'm currently lengthening the stock to fit my 6'3" frame. You can see pictures of the wood working project on: http://forums.huntnbuds.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1606Three years ago I bagged a doe mule deer with it. This fall my son and I have a bear hunt planned. I hope to carry the 300 H&H and bag my first bear with it. I love that rifle! Here are some thought or observation I have made comparing my 300 H&H to my other Pre-64 Mod 70, a 1949 .270 Winchester. Other than the magazine length, the two stocks and rifle actions are identical. The bolts will interchange - no, I haven't tried to fire the rifles with the bolts interchanged, and don't worry, I won't try it. I read all these postings about a long action or magnum length action but I don't see any difference when I compare. Any thoughts or opinions guys?

There is the most beautifull pre-64 win model 70 at my local gunshop that I covet every time I go in there. They are asking $1875.00 for it and its worth ever penny but a little too rich for my blood. You should see it though. Its absolutely pristine with the best piece of wood and finish I have ever seen. Not gawdy at all. Just a medium light finish on a piece of walnut with straight horizontal grain/satin finish. Its obviously been all re-done, not an original finish etc. Maybe I will go lay it way if its still there in a few months. Or if any of you are interested I could go take a few pix for you and post them on the site here. Let me know.

Mowzer,
I'm no expert, but $1875.00 sounds real steep to me for a refinished rifle....

I'd love to see some pictures but $1875.00 is too rich for my blood right now, someday maybe.
I tend to agree that $1875.00 is steep for a refinished pre-64.

HBB: Sorry for the late response. The base is an OLD Redfield one piece thatn came with the rifle when I bought it 25 years ago. As I stated previously, it's a 1941 manufacture, right before they stopped making them as a result of WWII. It's topped off with a Swaro 3X10X42 "A" line with a German #4 reticle. Stock's been refinished and a new Pachmyer decel installed. The entire action was checked for wear and trigger set to 3.5lb by Mark Penrod. It's for sale. Someone make me an offer I can't refuse...jorge

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Thanks for the info on the mounts. I wish I had the money to make an offer...It sucks being a Rifle Looney with no extra cash to feed the habit <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
