A government is the most dangerous threat to mans rights: it holds a legal monopoly on the use of physical force against legally disarmed victims.

Well, damn. Glad the guy survived the incident.
This kind of thing is not unheard-of. Infamous FBI-Miami Gunfight bad guys Platt and Matix obtained most of their guns by this method. All but one of their victims did not survive.
I've made a habit of being wary whenever I'm alone at a shooting range because of just such news stories.

Yup. And I carry at least one loaded handgun on my person at all times. And yes, I practice with my .45 at 100 yards regularly.

Never experienced a firearms theft, but I have been concerned over unknown individuals that just showed up at our local range to just hang out or look around. Firearms accompany me to the target in those instances.
Show up with a cabinet full of guns, and I'll not bat an eye.

Drill instructors in basic training beat it into our heads to take the claymore trigger with us when we were setting the charges. Likewise, ammo goes with me downrange if I'm alone or if there are unknown folks hanging around.
Very sad to hear about these incidents, definitely not the first one though.

My range is in the woods with a combination lock on the gate. I have always enjoyed the privacy. This thought never occured to me.

I always remember the scene in Silverado...Prayers sent for the old boy. Hope he makes it.
There was a big theft at the local gunstore here a few back. They caught the kid who did it. Looks like the Feds have him for transporting guns across the state line and selling them to felons. Guess he either better start practicing "Sig Heil" or maybe do some butt exercises or some such.
This shixt is only going to get worse if the economy don't get any better.

That's just north of Muskogee. I've been through many a time and worked with some old boys from there. It is rough territory despite Merle's claims.

therein lies the rub, I like when the range is empty or nearly so, it's incredible to me what some jabronis do at a busy range, i.e. lack of muzzle control, traipsing down range while it's hot, no spotting scope and calling for range clear after most folks have expended four or five rounds etc.
like Doc, I don't ever leave myself unarmed at the range, and a time or two when my spidey sense was tingling, I've even violated what I consider range etiquette by taking my rifle slung over my shoulder down range with me, to either repaper or collect targets.
sad state of affairs.
have even been at the range when the gang bangers showed up to practice, do rags unload from a car, and empty a mag or so at left behind targets on the handgun range, handgun held sideways, droopy drawers, the whole sterotype.
ai yi, yi, I'd be a liar if I didn't admit the thought crossed my mind to do the community a real service when I saw them.
believe there was just one other guy and myself at the rifle range when they pulled up to the handgun range.
I'm pretty certain when we sing our anthem and mention the land of the free, the original intent didn't mean cell phones, food stamps and birth control.

yup. i take the bolt with me when i go check targets. I've been known to do the same thing. I'm always a little unsettled when using a range with strangers present.

a combination lock on the gate. Our public range is club controlled and had to be locked due to severe vandalism in its opening week. I relock when I enter, but have had company arrive and on leaving found it locked but with the gate lifted off the hinges.

Ours is a private club with a locked gate and the firing range several hundred yards from the gate. We've still had people jump the gate and walk down to the firing ranges.

I have my Glock 20 with the 6" barrel and slide strapped on and I practice regularly with it at 100 yards too. I never leave the bolt in my rifle. I purchased one of those leather bolt holsters years ago that the benchrest crowd uses. I too have felt the need to bring my rifle with me when I go change targets. Ours is a private range, and we just installed one of those automatic gates that roll on a track. It's 8' tall, so they'd have to hike 400 yards through the woods to get around it, or climb over. Everyone has to wear an ID tag that's kept in a pouch and a lanyard that goes around the neck; unwelcome visitors would be readily identified.

I've often thought that we in America would be better off, if we brought back public hangings for drug dealers, pedophiles and trash like this....

Hope the old boy pulls through ok and they nail the SOB that did this. A place like that should be a place that a person should be safe to enjoy the day shooting not worrying about getting shot and robbed. Don't get me wrong I watch out for myself and my things hard when I go shooting at our range. Safety 1st, you are always the last line of defense.
