I was all set to buy a Kimber Montana for my do everything lightweight rifle, but this new Forbes rifle has me wondering if I should wait. Need opinions on if it will be worth the wait and an extra couple hundred dollars. Not looking to start an argument, just looking for feedback from people with more experience than myself with NULA's or Kimbers.

What's the price of the new forbes rifle? If it's as good as I think it's going to be, it's going to set the bar pretty damn high.

Hadn't heard about that. A Forbes would be a great choice.

Here is the article. I'm going assume that Forbes is going to do his best to make sure he puts together a rifle that will shoot very well. He's starting with the 270/30-06. It'd be nice if he expanded to some short actions. 243s, 260, 284, 7-08, and 308s would sell like crazy, if he had a good mag length and it was throated/twisted for some of the newer bullets. http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs...-lightweight-bolt-action-model-24b-rifle

One Kimber 84M here that won't shoot. If you want a 270 or an 06, the Forbes rifle is a no-brainer to me.

Best I can tell, the only differnce from a NULA will be the barrel and it will only be chambered in 270 and 30-06. It does not look like stainless will be an option, but I guess one could always get Melvin to rebarrel it later. Specs say 5 1/4 Lbs, does this sound right to all you model 24 owners. I also read that they will come with rings.

My understanding is any caliber you want as long as its 270 or 30-06 and chromoly for the Forbes. Should be a really nice rifle.

Seems odd that a $1500 rifle with a CM barrel should sell and a $1600 rifle with a stainless barrel wont.... Huh...

Yeah you would think offering a stainless barrel would be a no brainer, but I guess if you want options you have to step up to a NULA.

The Forbes rifle is the initial offering. If it sells reasonably well I'm sure there were be variations.
I would appreciate hearing why so many people want a stainless barrel.

Campfire lore has it that mountain game is impervious to bullets fired from a chrome moly barrel....

I have never had a stainless rifle, but I would think they would hold better for hard use as far as scrapes and weather.

I thought it was common knowledge that chrome moly gets brittle below 32*F.

If the action is CM, it's getting coated. So the barrel doesn't really matter as it'll get coated too. One of the worst rusting rifles I've had was a Kimber Montana. Those barrels just trapped moisture like no other.
