Hi Fellows,

I was eyeing a Ruger #1 RSI International with fairly nice wood in 7x57...

Obviously there is gonna be some stock to barrel contact so I wonder, how do the rifles shoot..?

Thank in advance for sharing your experience.

Scott

I've owned 2 Ruger #1 of the RSI variation - the 1st one in 7x57, the 2nd a .30-06.
Both were scoped blued steel/walnut rifles.

Shooting ONLY factory 175 gr loads, the 7x57 shot like crapola, and was soon send down the road.
I've since heard that Ruger was having barrel issues at the time, so couldn't say if a current 7x57 is any better or not.

The .30-06 shot 3/4" @ 100yds with both 150gr & 180gr factory JSP's, bone-stock, w/o any tweaking.

(I never handloaded for either rifle)

I just got one last Friday. Saturday morning I sighted it in with factory 140's that grouped about 1.5 MOA. I had four 150 grain handloads for another rifle that grouped slightly better.
I plan to try it out a little more this week, weather permitting.

I have an RSI in 243 and shoots 1 1/2" groups. I don,t know this for sure that is I never looked myself but Ruger told me that they were bedded out of the factory!
By the way I am in need of a rear sight platform for my RSI,anybody comes across one please keep me in mind.
Thanks

I have a 2006 RSI in 7x57. She shoots 173 grainers pretty well. Open sited I was able to put 5 inside an inch at 50 yards. With a little 1-4x32 muzzleloader scope I'm around 1 1/2" at 100. I see no reason to fuss over that. The trigger is quite good from the factory.

Okay.., So 3 report about 1.5 MOA, and another that didn't like the factory 175 grain loads...

Thanks all

My 7x57 RSI just bought this fall shoots 140 gr factory into 1.5" which is good for me. The 120 gr handloads were 1.25" and the 174gr handloads were also 1.25" I am not the best shooter, and that compares with most of my bolt guns so I am happy.

My 303 #1A shoots about 1" but the stock was customised for me and I have not shot the RSI since having the stock adjusted.

Medicman,

Are you saying that you had both the #1A AND the RSI stocks customized/adjusted.?

Anyone know if the RSI prefers to be full length bedded..?

I had a 7x57 RSI No. 1 that did not shoot up to my expectations (2+ inches at best at 100 yards with a variety of hand loads and factory ammo). I also have a 77 RSI in .243. I had a friend tweak the bedding on this one. It shoots between 1 and 1 1/2 inches with 100-grain partitions, but doesn't hold its zero very well. I literally have to recheck the zero every time I take it out of the safe.

Here are a few comments I made regarding my RSI in 7x57mm: https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth.../Re_Ruger_No_1_RSI_7x57_load#Post4652584

Scott...

Due to the short, relatively light 20" barrel, I've found my RSI in 7x57 heats up after only ONE round... and if I keep shooting, the barrel becomes VERY hot very quickly and accuracy goes "south" in a hurry.

HOWEVER... if I allow the barrel to cool back down to "just warm", the little RSI will shoot very accurately. My own RSI has shot "target loads" consisting of 3 shot groups @ 50 yards measuring .176 inches center-to-center using 47.2 grains of H4350 behind a 140 grain Sierra flat-based ProHunter bullet sparked by standard Winchester large rifle primers in Remington cartridge cases.

For hunting loads, I use the same components as above, but increase the powder charge to 50.0 grains (the MAXIMUM recommended load with a 140 grain bullet in a popular reloading manual) of H4350. This load shot a 3-shot group at 50 yards of .404 inches.

I seat the bullet within 20/1000ths of the lands & grooves, use a 4-12x40 scope with A/O set at "50 yards" and use the "set trigger" of about 8 ounces "pull-weight" on the Kepplinger Single Set Trigger I had my gunsmith install.

No other modifications have been done to my RSI, but the Kepplinger Single Set Trigger really helps if you want a truly smooth, very light trigger. However, it's about a $250 "modification". My "standard" trigger (without setting the single-set trigger) is 2.75 pounds.
