For that price, I would suggest a RWS 34 with a Hawke Air Max.
A good gun, with the right pellet of course, and a solid scope that'll handle the recoil. More than enough to do what you want. I would also suggest a good one piece mount, the 34 has a good kick that will make a cheap 2 piece mount creep on the action causing POI shifts.

The HW 50S is worth considering.

We have a Beeman R7 that we bought off the forum here used and really like it. Very accurate little rifle.

I just whacked a big chuck this a.m. with a Gamo .177 "Bone Collector" series break open air gun. It's far from a fine gun, but works well and the 3x9 scope works well. Got it for less than $300, no tax, free shipping, TYD:

The only fault I find with it is a pretty hard trigger, but I've gotten used to it.

The RWS 34 and Beeman R9 would be my pick in 177. I know you asked for .177, but if you want it for hunting, I'd move up to the 22 and a more powerful airgun. The RWS 48 and 350 are cannons in 22, but I find them a bit too powerful for best accuracy in 177.

I have only had my RWS 48 for about a month. But with the open sights I can put five into a dime size bull 5 out of 5 times at fifty feet with cheap Crossman pelts with these no longer young eyes. I picked up a canister of RWS Superpoint extra's last week but haven't tried them yet.
