Looking to buy my first handgun after owning a lot of rifles and shotguns. Came across a nice S&W 586,4" barrel, nickel finish,95% condition. Any opinions on this piece? How important are the various engineering changes? Book says there were seven. Any estimates on value? Thanks

I've got a no dash 4" that I wouldn't sell for way more than it's worth. I love the 4" L frames personally.

I think the 586s are $400 - $500 guns depending on condition and the grips, box, etc.
I'd say $420 for 95% but YMMV.

I don't know really. I gave 400 or 450 5 years ago for mine. Some blue worn form the muzzle and a ring on the cylinder was all. A seller at a gunshow in Tucson had a 4" mod 19 (I dont' remember what -) and the 586 for the same price. I grabbed the 586 and haven't regretted it for one moment.

The L-Frame S&W revolvers (586-686, etc.) are as close to perfection as I know for the 38/357 cartridges. Every serious revolver shooter should own at least one.

I've had one for about fifteen years, and they are great shooters, and handle very well, but they are service/sport size, and far from ideal as CCWs.

Thanks for the input. If it is a "dash" model, does that show as the 586-?. If it is not a "dash" model, is that make it more valuable?Has wood grips. Not looking for CCW,mostly in vehicle, bedside and carry while bowhunting and scouting.

If it is not a "dash" model, is that make it more valuable? Not really. There was a recall on the no-dash and -1 guns for the firing pin shroud and maybe the pin. Guns so modified are marked -M.

You are looking at $500 to $650 range depending on the condition but that's not saying that you can't find one cheaper. If you go with the Nickel (I owned one once) you will spend some extra time cleaning it. You should take that into consideration. Hope the info helps

I really like the 586's, mine's a 6" -4 with the hammer mounted firing pin and forged/case-colored hammer/trigger.

True enough, but every handgun doesn't have to fit in the CCW category.

The 4 to 6" L-Frame revolvers also make an excellent platform to develop handgun shooting skills. Many small, light, concealable handguns are not good choices for the novice hand-gunner.

I bought a 4" 586 no dash that hadn't had the "fix". I paid good money for it, willingly. I sent it to Smith, they fixed it for free.
It is beautiful, perfect and ............
I'll never part with it. My 6 year old son shot it this last summer with 38's. He's waiting to inherit it.
They are awesome.

If it's a pinned and recessed gun it is worth more to most people.

Sadly, there are no factory pinned and recessed L-frames.
