That SS bbl'd action in a B&C stock would make a nice all around set up in 7mm Rem Mag. You could also maybe consider a pillar bedded Hogue for around $100 or a Boyd's Laminate for a bit more. Either may save you a bedding job.
I bought one off the Campfire with a Bansner stock the seller had put on to replace the factory stock. Very nice handling gun and somewhat lighter than the factory ones I have lifted. It is a .308 Win and it shoots inside an inch at 100 yards with factory and handloads. Haven't hunted with it yet but will this next year.
We've had two. A 7mm Rem Mag and a 6.5x55 that were both great shooters with really good triggers. Still have the 6.5, wish I still had the 7. I would buy another in a heart beat.
They are great. They are more accurate than most and the action exceeds the Rem 700 capability if you want a donor action. The stock is their worst feature but even that can be glass bedded and the barrel floated for superb accuracy. The adjustable trigger is not great but can be tuned. I would replace it for target or varmint shooting. They are a little heavier than some but the weight is not bad.
If you intend to re-barrel, your gunsmith will have to be capable of dealing with metric threads and they crimp those barrels on so they are tough to remove. Overall a great hunting rifle that is an outstanding value at their current price. With the upgrades you are planning, you will have a beautiful rifle that will shoot with the best of them.
Every time someone asks this question, I post the last shot/shots taken with my Howa 1500, 30-06.
It is stock but for the steel Leupold scope mounts and the Burris Signature Zee rings... the stock aluminum scope mounts and rings failed.
I don't know if this was directed at me, but I never said they were not accurate. I have the above mentioned 7WSM in a McSwirley, and a cheapo Vanguard .223 in the factory stock, and when the Vanguard .240 Weatherbys are released, I be standing outside my local gun pusher's place with cash in hand.
Now if Weatherby would just chamber the 7mm Weatherby in a Vanguard...

I purchased a new Vanguard couple months ago in 270 Winchester had it to the range twice. So far and excellant rifle. ever bit as accurate as the 2 model 70 that I shot with it yesterday. Mild recoil, better trigger pull than the model 70,s slightly lighter. Better balance than the 257 Roberts model 70, the 257 seems barrel heavy compared to the Vanguard Lot less recoil than the 7mm model 70.
I have the Howa in 6.5x55 and like it fine. I thought the Hogue stock was too flexible for my bipod, so I replaced it with a Boyd's thumbhole. It is a very heavy setup, especially for this caliber, but that's OK with me.
A .270 SS and a Blued 30-06...They were great rifles in the accuracy dept. The .270 was fabulous on anything I loaded in it. The 30-06 was good too but didn't shoot it as much. The triggers are not that good but can be solved with a gunsmith or replacing them. For the money you couldnt beat these rifles because of the way they shot. Put a Leupold on them and you got a great inexpensive rig. I was gonna build some customs off the two I had but the barrel is metric thread and not many people deal with metric threaded barrels. I sold both for more than I had in them. Great cheap guns.
Only have a survey sample of one and it is a killing machine. $300 new years ago for a friend and it is now my buddy's go-to rifle in .270 for deer and hogs
"Found" my Howa 1500 bolt this weekend and put it back in the .223 rifle. I had just finished cleaning my older Weatherby Vanguard Classic .257 that is very accurate and hammers deer. Noticed they are the same rifle with different brands.
