I have a Ruger Stainless 44 Mag Super Blackhawk with a 10 inch barrel. I want to put a scope on it but don't have a clue as to what is the best to buy that will stand up. HELP PLEASE!

Have you given any thought to an Ultra Dot?

ultradot's are the best scopes for the money and handle the recoil

I have a Ruger SBH bisley hunter in 41 magnum with a 7.5 inch barrel. I typically shoot the 210 gr Hornady XTP at about 1400 fps. So the revolver does generate a bit of recoil.

My Nikon Monarch 2x20 has held up well for about a thousand rounds over the last six years. I think 2X is about all the magnification one should use on a revolver.

Thanks very much. What kind of yardage would you be comfortable shooting out to with the 2X20

Thanks for the welcome. Any specific magnification you would recommend? I would like to get out to 100 yards off a rest

Thanks to all for getting back to me. I will look at the Ultra Dot. I have only been around one that my brother had and it had a come apart on his 41 mag

For me it would be 4x. I like the Leupold 2.5 x 8 or the Burris 3 x 12...but that is just me. They are kind of long for a revolver, but they work. The Leupold 4x is fairly compact and might suit your needs.

For hunting I prefer a 2x maximum mostly based on field of view. For reference, a Leupold VX-II 4x20 rifle scope has a FOV of 28.5-feet. Leupold handgun scope FOV's:

2x20 - 21.2-feet
4x28 - 9-feet

A 9-foot FOV sucks and higher power scopes are generally worse yet. For target shooting it might not matter, but for hunting the larger FOV the better.

Forgive me my nonsense, as I also forgive the nonsense of those that think they talk sense.

I've had/still have Leupold and Burris fixed power scopes on several .44 mags and a Lone Eagle .308 with nary a hitch.

I kinda favor Leupold myself, but the Burris has no flies on it either.

This type of reddot is my fav for pistols:

Leupold Reflext reddot
No sight alignment. You just put dot on target and pull trigger.

With a proper rest which, for me, means a bench or car hood, I could hit a deer in the vitals to 100 yds. I can keep six rounds in about two inches at 50 yds from the bench.

But I don't foresee many deer walking downrange of my bench rest, and it is not legal to shoot them from the road where the car would be parked.

So realistically, I would have to keep any shots within fifty yards if I were hunting with my revolver.

Leupold 2X is hard to beat for hunting. I have one of their 4X's as well, and had another in the past. It was slow to get on target because of the limited field of view.

If you don't mind a little more weight, look at a Burris 1.5-4X. Been a while since I had one, but my sense was I had more field of view and a little brighter than the Leupold 2X, but I could crank it up and see well enough to shoot reasonably well at 100 yards.

After 25 years of handgun hunting, I've gotten away from scopes for hunting game. The advantages aren't enough to offset the disadvantages of weight and awkwardness. Might be different if you're stand hunting but most of my handgun hunting is still hunting heavy cover and the irons just work better. On target faster with less fuss can be the difference between venison and no venison.

These days with older eyes, I prefer things like the Ultradot L/T red dot type sights. It's easier to use both eyes, no problems with field of vision and no issues with focusing on sights. I don't have much use for magnification with a handgun, at least not for any normal handgun that's not a long range varminter.

I like the Leupold 2x. It has held up to a bunch of 300gr XTPs

I had more trouble with mounts than scopes. I've tried B-Square and Weaver "no-tap" mounts; worked OK but would loosen after 100 or so rounds.

This TSOB mount from SSK Industries has worked great.
