I have a question for any of you 99 collectors. How common is a late 50's 99F in .250 Savage. A buddy of mine brought one over for me to work on a few weeks ago and I love it. I was at a pawn shop with him when he picked it up a few years ago and kinda forgot what it actually was.
I've got a .250 in a later model A that I like a lot, but the F feels a little better in my hands and its also factory tapped with the faster twist rifling. I've been searching the Auction sites and no .250 F's ever come up.

Thanks,

Mike

I want one as well. I have an EG but wish I had the F.

Not that common, but definitely not rare. Anything prior to 1960 still haz the slower 1 in 14" twist, tho.

Maybe 3 or 4 a year show up on Gunbroker, and they usually sell for $800+ in decent condition. I agree with you; in my opinion, a .250 F is maybe the ideal deer rifle.

...was contemplating maybe letting mine go...think I will hold onto it a bit longer wink

I have a lead on another F in .300 for about 4 hondo in decent shape...not collector shape, but ok...no cracks or holes wherethey don't belong. Not sure I need another 300 F.

...now a 250 R....that may be a horse I would need to ride!

I have a F in .300 and a perfect 50's EG (I think) in .300. My first centerfire gun was an E . My dad bought it from his buddy for $75.00 and gave it to me a couple months before my first deer hunt back in '82. The most memorable gift I've ever received and that little plain jane gun really started my love affair with lever actions.

Fatjack.. that's a pretty decent price for a good 99F now. I've seen a lot on GB lately and usually there's something tinkered with on the $400 range guns.

Calhoun, thanks for the info on the twist. I thought they changed them over in the 50's. Guess my buddy's little gun isn't gonna shoot the heavier bullets. I'm gonna find a .250 F. I love my .250 A, but the featherweight feels like the perfect deer gun to me.
