How many of you guys raise chickens? What breeds to you like. I always try to have a mixed herd so I have the variety. Looking to get some Welsummers as soon as they are available. Anyone ever raise the Welsummers or Barnevelders? Looking for some darker eggs than I get with the typical heavies like Rocks and Orpingtons. Getting ready to butcher all my buff rocks as they have quit laying.

I've got a mixed flock of barred rocks, a leghorn, and some ameraucanas. Last bunch were all rocks, next one may well be all leghorns. The ameraucanas lay some neat blue and green eggs, but that leghorn is the best producer I've got. But of course our weather is a little different. smile

8 girls here, barred rocks, brahmas, and buffs.. I really like the Brahmas, they take the cold weather without a beat, and are mellow birds.

I'll be getting some more and a rooster here soon, as we're moving to a better chicken place.

we have barred rocks, Rhode Islands, Americanas, naked necks, silver winedots??? and some bastardized mixed breeds mixed in. Some I'm sure are ready for the pot but I just don't have the time right now. 17 layers and we get 3 to 4 dozen eggs a week.

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Red sex link and new hampshire here. Good brown color eggs and lots of jumbo double yoked eggs in second if you force them (lighted roost)

A lot depends on what you want. If it's meat you can beat the giant Cornish crosses, but those birds do absolutely nothing but eat, [bleep], and sit in their [bleep], and make meat.

For eggs we usually do RI reds as there is a stewable amount of meat when they are at the end of laying.

I wish our local village idiots would let us raise chickens in town...even the liberal bastion of Laramie allows it IIRC.

There was a peacock on the ranch I stayed on in Namibia. That stalking bitch did not like me,at all.

I surely am giving it serious thought and trying to plan the house for them in the back yard.
