CutNHare,

I happen to have the Leupold, so take this FWIW. I was also considering the 4x Nikon, it's about $100.

My buddy has a $25 Redhead scope on his rimfire, and he likes it fine. It tracks in the right direction (I don't think 1/4 inch, but I've never measured) and holds zero, and that's probably all a rimfire scope needs to do. He got it zeroed quickly and was printing normal 10/22 sized groups in less than 20 minutes.

Check out the Weaver RV7 and RV9. Really good glass and less expensive.

Doug is your friend (as always! grin):

Vortex Crossfire 4x32 Rimfire V-Plex (Part# CRF-432) Riflescope was $114.99, now only $69.99

That's a great scope, especially for that price. And Doug's the best.

Weaver?

Or for cheaper, Simmons ".22 mag". I ran a 4X on a 77/22 in .22 mag for a couple years and it did what I asked of it.

I'll second that recommendation, I have one a Savage/Anschutz 22 WMR and I'm very happy with it.

That's a good question. We ought to put our money into the guns and optics we use the most.

I run a Leupold VX II 4-12X on my .17 HMR, for whatever that's worth. It seems a good balance of magnification vs field of view for the heavy barreled Ruger 77/17.

Weaver is made by a reputable Japanese mfg. I have the RV7 on my Sako Quad and don't plan on switching it out.

Another vote for the Clearidge RM. It's basically a Weaver RV9 scope, but with LOW built turrets (same as found on Weaver V16 and V24, and Bushnell 4200 target models). It's usually rated as very close to the Leupold EFR, and you get repeatable turrets to boot and pay 30% less.
The Vortex Crossfires are nice (I have a 4-12x AO mode), but I'd rate the Weaver RV7, RV9 or Clearidge RM higher.
Some other nice .22 scopes are the Sightron SI rimfire 3-9x or the Nikon prostaff rimfire models.

Have B&L 3-9x42 on one, zeiss 3-9x40 on one and have used nikon rimfire on two rifles so far. All are adequate and depends on what you're looking to do. All can be used for 100yds and beyond. Good Luck, TG

The leupold 2x7 scope i have is a nice scope but i find that the thin crosshairs get "lost" amongst the tree branches when used to hunt squirrels.

I've got a Japan made Simmons 6x40 AO TT on the classifeds right now. $65 TYD. It focuses down to about 10yds or so. I used it on my A-Bolt .22 until I upgraded to a Vari-X 3x9x32 EFR.

What rifle?

I have the Clearidge on my CZ 452, but I'd opt for the Leupold 4x28 or 2-7x28 on a Remington 572. I'd be looking at the Nikon 4x if I was scoping a CZ Scout. Doug's deal on the Vortex is pretty good, too.

It's not a cheap scope, but it is the best .22 scope I've ever owned. Look at Pride Fowler Industries rapid reticle line. These scopes are FFP and have etched glass reticles calibrated for the .22 LR out to 200 yards. I've shot mine a bunch and it is just a hoot because it is spot on. The optics are great too. I had a Tasco World Class on my favorite .22, but it was never very clear, then a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10, but it wouldn't focus close enough. I was suitably impressed with the PF to buy another for my .17 HMR. It is calibrated out to 300 yards and just as precise as the one on my .22.
If it's not in the cards right now, I put a really inexpensive Bushnell on a kid's .22 and was impressed with the quality. Cost was less than $50?. Then save your money for the PF... you want one of these. grin
