I see that American Eagle offers a 185gr SP load for the 338 Federal. Has anyone tried it yet? Seems like it might be a decent deer load, and cheap practice for moving up to the 185gr Barnes load.

Killed this 210 lb boar with this load in my new Ruger #1-AB a couple weeks ago. One animal proves little but all I can say is he hit the ground like the Earth had been snatched out from under him, kicked for a few seconds and then crossed over to the big hog wallow beyond. It was a through the ribs shot with no damage to shoulders or spine and he didn't move out of his tracks. Internal damage was massive and the bullet exited cleanly. Couldn't ask for more than that from ANY bullet. The guy I was hunting with is a veteran of 50 years of hog hunting and he's killed them with all sorts of guns. He was VERY impressed. I have no reason to look elsewhere for a more impressive hunting load.

I bought a few boxes and got through about 10 rounds or so before my Cabelas Scope blew out!(still mad about it) Anyway, they grouped 1.25 or or so and seemed to be ok. Also I now have some 338 Federal headstamped brass. Cheap too!
